Our School Vision

“Cheltenham East students are empowered learners who are flexible thinkers with the skills and knowledge to respond critically and creatively to their world.”

Acknowledgement

Some of our Year 3/4 students will be doing an acknowledgement to Country each Monday morning at 9am over the loud speaker.

I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land on which we are gathered and pay our respects to the elders past, present and emerging of the Bunurong people and extend that respect to other indigenous Australians in the community.

It’s Story Time

Today at 2:30pm the third of our transition visits for next year’s Foundation children took place. They participated in literacy activities in the Foundation class for an hour.  Each visit should see them gain a little in confidence as they get use to routines and where everything is located.  The parents were treated to afternoon tea in the hall by our Parents and Friends.

School Disco

The student disco is on tonight with Foundation - Year 2’s running from 5.30pm to 6.45pm and the Year 3 - 6 disco is running from 7pm to 8.30pm.  Thankyou to the parents who are co-ordinating the disco.

I am sure the children will have lots of fun!

Book Fair

On Monday the 22nd of August the book fair opens so you can buy books before school and after school in the library.  The book fair will close on Thursday of next week.  On the 23rd the children can dress up in an animal costume. See the BOOK FAIR tab for more information

Garden Improvements

Mr Jon Cartwright our resident handyman has been working hard on OHS safety issues around the school as well as cleaning up the gardens around the school buildings. Concreting trip hazards on the asphalt and the oval areas has been a priority as well as mulching all of the dead branches and shrubs near the Year 3/4 portables to put on the garden beds which will help the plants grow.  The maintenance crew from Year 6 have spread soft fall around the junior playground areas and will do the senior playground area next week.

Parking

A resident in Tenham Grove (just over the other side of Centre Dandenong Road) has had her car hit twice by someone parking in that area. She thinks it is a person picking up their children during the school run in the afternoon.  If you know anything about this please contact the resident directly.  Please be mindful of local residents when parking your car for drop off or pickup. Do not park in driveways or too close to street corners or you may be booked by the parking officer.

Extra- Curricular Activities

Extra -curricular activities are an important part of our school program.  These activities are not compulsory curriculum areas, but complement and strengthen core curricular programs and fit into our school community ethos.  It would be rare to have a week go by at Cheltenham East Primary School when we would not have some kind of extra-curricular activity!  Teachers give up their lunchtimes in some cases to mentor the children eg Gardening/Environment, Art Club, Library time, Chess club etc

Hygiene/Masks

To enhance our approach to cleaning, hand sanitiser is available at entry points to all classrooms in the school. Age-appropriate education and reminders about hand hygiene are used throughout the school and the reminder to attend to hand-washing. If soap and water are not readily available, hand sanitiser that contains at least 60 percent alcohol is made accessible. Masks remain highly recommended for everyone to wear. If your child is a close house hold contact they have to wear a mask indoors at school.

Cyber Use at Home

A reminder to all parents that they need to closely monitor their children’s use of any electronic devices including mobile phones, iPads and computers at home. Every parent should regularly check the site history of laptops and iPads to ensure the children are using them in the correct way.

Cut down on Litter

We actively encourage our students to avoid bringing packets and plastic wrappers (Nude Food) to school. It cuts down on litter and is much better for the environment. A named container is perfect.

School Values

The children will continue working closely together through the coming winter months. This is a great time to reinforce our school values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, COURTESY and CO-OPERATION with all children. Filling someone’s bucket of kindness should be a priority for all children and adults. Helping others is to be encouraged by everyone and can be done in a variety of ways. It is great to see our Year 6 children looking after the younger children out in the yard.
