Mathematics Report

There has been a quite a few events this year as various activities come back online after the last two years of disruption.  There has been so many students participating and I take this opportunity to thanks and congratulate all!

Some highlights are;

  1. Australian Mathematical Olympiad.  An Australia-wide, invitation-only (approximately 100 students) competition, Christopher T (Year 11) achieved a Gold Certificate, placing him in the top 10% of Australian students.

  2. Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad.  Christopher T (Year 11) was invited to represent Australia in this most rigorous competition. Congratulations to Christopher for his Silver Award.

  3. International Mathematical Olympiad. As has already been reported elsewhere, congratulations to Christopher T (Year 11) who was one of six students representing Australia at the IMO in Norway last month. Christopher received a Bronze medal for his work.

  4. Computational and Algorithmic Competition (CAT).  62 students attempted this clear-thinking and problem-solving paper. In particular, our congratulations to Riley D (Year 10) and Mason J (Year 11) who both received High Distinctions for their work.

  5. The University of Melbourne School Mathematics Competition.  34 students from across all year levels competed in this most demanding of our open-entry activities.  Three senior student have been recognised for their work in this three-hour paper. Congratulations to Christopher T (Year 11) who placed third in the entire competition; and to Connor B (Year 11) and Liam M (Year 12) who both received a Certificate of Merit. All three students will be invited to attend The University of Melbourne later in the year to receive their certificates and prizes.

  6. Maths Challenge. 76 students completed this three-week activity. Congratulations to all as we await the results to be released.

  7. Australian Mathematics Competition.  A busy day for us last week as 209 students from across all of our year levels participated in this long-standing activity. Results will hopefully be available later this term.

And there is still more to come.

Firstly, The University of Melbourne School Maths Olympics will be held later this month as part of their Open Day.  We will have one team participating on the day.  Our best wishes to Liam M (Year 12), Dumonette L (Year 12), Christopher T (Year 11), Mason J (Year 11), and Connor B (Year 11).  Following this we will be running the Australian Informatics Olympiad, The Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad, and the entrance exam to the National Mathematics Summer School to be held in Canberra in January 2023.  We wish all of these participants the best.
