Year 10 and 11 Adviser Reports

Year 10

I would like to congratulate Year 10 for an amazing finish to the year. The Stage 6 Preparation Program has been extremely well supported and the students have gained valuable insight and experiences which should assist them as they commence Stage 6 next year. They have also had the opportunity to have some fun and have enjoyed activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, Treetops, the beach excursion with an Amazing Race at the Haven, Chef for a Day, just to name a few. The taster lessons were also helpful for the students to get an idea of the courses they will be studying next year and whether they are a good fit for them.

There have been many great achievements throughout the year and this has culminated in some outstanding end of year reports which I had a great pleasure in reading. On the whole the students have worked hard and given their best efforts to class work and tasks. They will need to continue and build on this effort to ensure success in the senior school.

Students have also been outstanding in extra-curricular activities. The Illuminate challenge is one example with both teams doing extraordinary work, with one of our teams winning the whole competition! Well done to all of those involved. We also had two students receive the Probus Club of West Gosford Good Citizen Award which is wonderful recognition of the work that Stephanie Peterson and Brandon Willmette have applied throughout their school life so far.

Many students assisted with fundraising for their Dinner and Dance, and the carwash was a fun and very successful mornings work. The carpark was filled with nice shiny cars the next day! Thank you to Mr Wright and Miss Imer who stepped up to help on the day when a family emergency took me away.

The Dinner and Dance is a fantastic way for the students to finish off their junior years and look forward to their HSC. It was a fun night. For the students not returning next year we all wish you every success in your future endeavours.

Students were also lucky enough to have a guest speaker who happened to be a former Henry Kendall High School student. Josh Ross attended our school in the 90’s and has had amazing success as a sprinter, winning 3 Stawell Gifts and being part of the 4x100m relay team that ran in the Olympic final in London – first team since 1956. Josh had some interesting stories to tell the students about competing at high level and brushes with fame – running against Usain Bolt in that Olympic final. More importantly though he had messages for the students about resilience, perseverance and success. Year 10 students very much enjoyed listening to him.

I would like to wish all of Year 10 and their families a safe and Happy Christmas and look forward to seeing the students return all decked out in their senior shirts! (PS Senior Jackets arriving in February!)

Year 11

Congratulations to the cohort for completing their first term of Year 12 content! It’s been an exceptionally busy time for everyone, forcing students to learn the importance of time management.

Well done to all students who completed a work placement this term. It was a joy to hear all of the reports with glowing reviews about the conduct of students within their temporary work environments. Several were declared the best work placement student the business has had, which is yet another example of why the year group has such an impressive reputation.

More examples of this are our leadership team, who have had many commitments this term. This includes giving heartfelt speeches at the Year 12 and 10 formals, Presentation Evening, and collaborating with other leadership teams to work out their 2020 visions for our school. As always, they have represented with professionalism and enthusiasm, and are to be commended for their efforts.

Some of our appointed leaders and their peers were invited to attend the Vivo reward excursion in Week 8. Unfortunately, many of the Top 10 were not able to attend due to study commitments, however, their places were filled with other well deserving recipients who had a great time. They will be treasured memories for all involved!

This last part of the term has been filled with high stakes assessment tasks for all students. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of time with their mentors, official or otherwise, to help them through this stressful time and to plan strategies to support them through other busy periods next year. I hope everyone is able to take time over the summer holidays to recharge to return in 2020 refreshed and ready to smash the HSC. Have a safe and happy break!
