Deputy Principal's Report

Years 7, 9 and 11

As 2019 comes to an end I would like to thank all the wonderful teachers who have contributed so much to the learning experiences of our Henry Kendall students.

Year 7 are preparing to move out of the Middle School and join the movement around the school as they enter into Year 8. It is timely at this moment to thanks Mr Macdonald who has been a proactive support for all staff and students in Year 7 throughout the year. To Ms Sexty, Ms Searle, Mr Banks, Mrs Jones and Mr Silver and all the other staff who have created such interesting workshop and maths learning opportunities for Year 7, again thanks. Year 7 have participated in lots of new learning opportunities this year and many have grown in maturity and their academic abilities have been fostered and extended and I look forward to working with them in 2020.

In particular I would also like to thanks Miss Reynen for all her amazing support throughout 2019 as Year 7 Adviser.

When Year 7 were asked to reflect on their time as Year 7 students they unanimously references all the great friends they have made, the Year 7 Camp, making lots of delicious treats in TAS and definitely working on their $20 BOSS project and YAP have really enjoyed their Project Based Learning experiences too.

Literacy is the ability to read, view, write, design, speak and listen in a way that allows us to communicate effectively and to make sense of the world.

Year 8 2020 we will be focusing on developing literacy skills and all Year 8 classes will be working on a wide reading program, throughout the holidays students should be looking for books they might like to read during this program.

A book is a device to ignite the imagination.

Year 9 2019 has been an extremely busy time with: Peer Support, Student  Leadership opportunities , Relay for Life, Performing Arts Night and lots of sporting teams and experiences.

Again a huge thanks to Miss McLennan you has guided Year 9 into such a wonderful group of citizens.

When Year 9 reflected on their year their highlights were clearly times spent together and the great friends they have made, they too have loved working on projects in particular the ones that involve food and team activities.

I would like to personal congratulate Year 9 for being such a great group who are always willing to lend a hand and work together to help others. We are all looking forward to watching them excel in 2020.

Year 11 have moved into the HSC pattern and have already begun their assessment journey. They are working hard to conceptualise all their different subjects’ content, tasks and skills. Year 12, 2020 will begin their year with Senior Executive interviews where they will have an opportunity to talk about their progress and learn about all the support systems in place as they complete their HSC. I would also like to thanks Mrs Draper, Mr Quilty and in particular Miss Fitzgerald who has been wonderful assets as Year Adviser and look forward to a great 2020.

When Year 11 were asked to reflect on their first year as seniors their overwhelming response centred around, getting organised, so many things to consider, the school captains reflected on the different demands they now had and the importance of planning, others have learnt the hard way about what happens when we are not organised. However, overall Year 11 are a fantastic group of individuals who show each other and the school community respect and gratitude at all times.

Year 11 and the school are so proud of Katie Gunn winning a bronze medal at the U18’s Long Jump at the Australian All Schools Championships with a jump of 5.93m.

Words by Katie Gunn:

"Being an athlete is great. I have met some fantastic people and competed in all sorts of weather and in interesting places. I train 5 days a week, so balancing school can be difficult especially when I am building up to a big competition. This brings along a bit of stress but keeping a calendar / diary helps me to plan ahead. I use my travel time to and from training to read and plan assessments and home work."

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!
