PDHPE Report

It has been an extremely busy term for the PDHPE faculty in Term 4 with staff conducting a large number of whole school activities and excursions which has given the students a wide range of learning experiences outside the classroom. While inside the classroom, students have been learning about a variety of key health issues including: Online Footprint, Surviving the Australian Summer and Diversity within our Community.

Life Ready

Earlier this term students in Year 11 undertook their Life Ready Camp at Mangrove Mountain. The aim of the camp was to challenge students and to place them outside their comfort zone with a range of activities. Rock Climbing, Giant Swing, Flying Fox and Challenge Ropes course we’re just some of the activities of that the students undertook. Students also engaged in a range of theory based sessions concerning drug use, independence and positive mental health. A huge thanks to all of the staff that attended the camp.

Pre Service Teachers in PDHPE

This term the PDHPE faculty have had two Pre Service Teachers. Kelly Robinson from Sydney University and Salest Montgomery from Newcastle University have worked closely with our students this term and we wish them all the best with their future pathways.

PDHPE/PASS Planning Days

With the implementation of the new PDHPE syllabus on the horizon the PDHPE faculty have been busy programming and designing new scope and sequences, programs and assessment tasks for Stage 4, 5 PDHPE and PASS. This was a fantastic opportunity for the staff to share ideas and discuss future strategies for PDHPE at Henry Kendall High School.

Student Voice Project

During week 5 and 6 of term, 50 student leaders participated in a two day student voice project. The aim of the project was for the various student leaders throughout the school to come together and create a mission statement and select the student voice priorities for 2020. As part of the two day project students received leadership training from Kat Collins (Ted Ed Coach Speakout Schools).

At the conclusion of the 2 days our student’s leaders decided on the following mission statement for 2020:

The purpose of student voice at Henry Kendall High is to provide all students with an opportunity to express their opinions and concerns in a non-judgemental environment. The opportunity for students to present a diverse range of ideas: enhance school culture, provide students with a sense of contribution and create a sense of belonging and accomplishment. These opportunities enable students to become active participants in their community while acknowledging their own individual sense of identity.

The four priority areas for 2020

  • Diversity
  • Wellbeing
  • Student Engagement
  • Global Awareness

All of the whole school activities that are undertaken at Henry Kendall High School in 2020 will have these priorities as the main focus.

Thanks to Mrs Smith, Mrs Bath and Mrs Kostalas for their contributions to the project.

GRIP Leadership - Newcastle Town Hall

Our student leaders in Year 9 attended the GRIP Leadership Conference at Newcastle Town Hall. Students learnt about the qualities of good leader and the skills necessary to shape their own leadership style. Thanks to Mrs Smith for organising the event.

Central Coast Youth Leadership Forum

On Wednesday 27 November, 15 students from Year 8 and Year 9 attended the Central Coast Youth Leadership Forum at Woy Woy Leagues Club. The forum was hosted by Leisl Tesch MP and students listened to and engaged with a range of presenters from HeadSpace, Central Coast Women’s Health and Climate Schools. We hope that this opportunity will build the capacity of some of our future leaders.

On behalf of the PDHPE Faculty I would like to thank all of the staff in the PDHPE faculty for their commitment and positive contributions throughout 2019.

I would also like to wish all of the students and their families a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to 2020.
