French Delights!

Year 7s in conversation

by Chris Dite, French Teacher

In Year 7 we’ve explored simple ways of talking about the future (eg "I am going to speak Frenchje vais parler français"). We’ve also delved into the mysteries of time (eg why is it "ten to two" in English but "trois heures moins dix" in French?). We’ve expanded our range of regular "er" verbs and grappled with new irregular verbs (faire, pouvoir, vouloir, devoir, falloir).

Perhaps most importantly for our current setting, we’ve examined how to talk about school subjects, timetables, teachers and classroom objects, and we’ve put all of our new language skills to use writing dialogues, diary entries, film reviews (Une Vie de Chat) and even pitches for film sequels (Les Vacances du Petit Nicolas 2).

Bravo et bonnes vacances!

Heading for France

by Linda Kay, French Teacher

Students from Years 10/11 will be putting their French language skills into action in December/January. Organised by Almost French Teaching and Exchange, they will spend several weeks exploring the sights and also attending school with their French penfriends.

This is such a fantastic opportunity to improve their confidence and language skills, as well as participating in the day-to-day life in another country.

Departing on 8 December and returning on 12 January, they will be located in the northern cities of Reims and Lille. We look forward to hearing all about their experiences at the start of next year!

2018 French language assistant: Juldana Mousar

Preshil is a participant in the international School Language Assistants Program which places native language speakers in schools across Australia.

As a school that teaches French from Kindergarten to VCE, as well as offering the International Baccalaureate MYP and DP, including Spanish to students in Year 11 who wish to take up a new language study, we are committed to supporting all our students to become confident and informed global citizens.

Expanding, improving and enriching our language program is a central part of this and to date we have hosted Jennifer, Celia and Melisande who have successfully assisted our students in the development of their language learning, under the supervision of the classroom teacher.

We have received an application from a French speaking volunteer, Juldana Mousar, who has a degree in Economics from the University of Paris Descartes, whose interests include fitness, travel and photography. As a French speaker and student of Spanish, Juldana will be able to contribute to the language programs at Preshil in many different ways.

We look forward to having Juldana join us for Term 1.
