Welcome back for our last Term of Grade 5! The students have settled back into our routines extremely well. It's been great to see everyone again and hear all about their school holiday adventures.

A massive thank you to all of the parents who dedicated their time to contacting our novel study books. This is greatly appreciated!

English

In Grade 5, we are reading our novel: Tom Appleby Convict Boy. In line with this, some reading lessons involve building background knowledge about convicts and the early settlement period in Australia. Students are linking their reading to write well-structured, informative texts.

Students will also focus on sentence structures such as including appositives and relative clauses, as well as expanding sentences and taking notes.

Mathematics

We continue to practice our number fluency for 4 minutes each day. We encourage students to practice at home, riding to school with friends, or on their way to sports with family members.

Over the next fortnight, Grade 5 will be practicing measurement, in particular:

-Comparing and selecting units of measurement for capacity.

-Accurately measuring capacity.

-Selecting units of measurement and estimating to solve problems for length, mass and capacity.

And beginning our unit on location, where we will be practicing:

-Identifying coordinates on a Cartesian plane (first quadrant).

-Plotting coordinates on a Cartesian plane (first quadrant).

-Identifying coordinates of shapes on a Cartesian plane (first quadrant).

-Plotting coordinates of shapes on a Cartesian plane

Creative Connections

This term, we are trialling a 'rebrand' of Inquiry called 'Creative Connections.'

What Creative Connections is:

  • Application time where students use knowledge already explicitly taught (from novels/picture books, Core Knowledge, Maths) in a creative task to show or exhibit their learning.
  • Students have choice and voice within well-planned, structured tasks.
  • Timetabled for two sessions per week.

For the next 2- weeks, students in Grade 5 will be creating a board game based on our novel study: Convict Boy. At the end of the unit, they will have the chance to play each others' games.
