Grade 4

English

The Grade 4 students have been exploring their Core Knowledge unit on Captain Cook’s First Voyage, learning about who Captain Cook was, the preparation behind his journeys, and the reasons he travelled across the oceans. In writing, they have been developing their skills in creating Single Paragraph Outlines (SPOs), focusing on the three voyages of Captain James Cook and the First Fleet. Alongside this, students continue to strengthen their spelling through Spelling Mastery sessions held three to four times a week, and are working on improving both their typing and handwriting fluency. They are also building reading fluency through regular echo and partner fluency sessions.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the Grade 4 students have finalised their unit on capacity, where they applied numbers to two decimal places when measuring and estimating different quantities. They have now begun their Data Investigation unit, using spreadsheets to collect and record data, and creating pictographs to represent larger numbers. Students have also been learning to construct column graphs and interpret a range of different graph types. In addition, they continue to build their number fluency through daily practice sessions, with many students showing strong progress and confidently working on more advanced skills.

Creative Connections

This term, we are trialling a 'rebrand' of Inquiry called 'Creative Connections.'

What Creative Connections is:

  • Application time where students use knowledge already explicitly taught (from Literacy, Core Knowledge units, picture story books or Maths) in a creative task to show or exhibit their learning.
  • Students have choice and voice within well-planned, structured tasks.
  • Timetabled for two sessions per week.

In Creative Connections, students have been designing their own board games based on what they’ve learned in our Core Knowledge Unit on the First Fleet. Through this task, students are reflecting on the challenges faced during the voyage, such as storms, sickness, and limited supplies, while also exploring the decisions and experiences of people on board.

This hands-on activity encourages students to think critically, apply their historical knowledge, and use their creativity to make learning fun and meaningful. We can’t wait to see their finished games!
