Grade 3

English
The Grade 3 students have made a fantastic start to Term 4!
In English, students have enjoyed delving into the novel Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon, which follows the adventures of Yirra, her friends, and her mischievous dog, Demon.
In writing, students have been focusing on expanding their ideas by using ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘where’ questions, as well as conjunctions such as because, but and so to build more detailed sentences. They have also begun learning about factual recount writing, with everyone beginning an informative piece about the history of the Australian Aboriginal Flag.
Each day, students continue to engage in Spelling Mastery, handwriting, and reading fluency sessions.
Mathematics
The Grade 3 students have started the term with a focus on 3D shapes in mathematics. They have explored the properties of 3D shapes by identifying and describing their edges, vertices, and faces. In addition, students have investigated volume, considering how different bases can affect a shape’s overall mass.
This week, students are shifting their focus to their final Addition and Subtraction unit for the year. They will begin applying their understanding of addition and subtraction strategies to solve worded problems and real-life situations.
Students are also continuing to make great progress in number fluency, with many moving on to the next skill level and showing increased level of automaticity.
Creative Connections
This term, we are trialling a 'rebrand' of Inquiry called 'Creative Connections.'
What Creative Connections is:
- Application time where students use knowledge already explicitly taught (from Literacy, Core Knowledge units, picture story books or Maths) in a creative task to show or exhibit their learning.
- Students have choice and voice within well-planned, structured tasks.
- Timetabled for two sessions per week.
During Creative Connections this term, the students have been creating character profiles for characters from their novel Yirra. In addition, they have been delving more deeply into Australian Aboriginal culture, history and traditions by reading picture story books and other supplementary texts.
