Explore the Learning in Prep

English

The students have had a fantastic beginning to their final term of Prep. In English, the students have begun a new Core Knowledge unit, 'Who's on Our Money,' where they are learning about the use and purpose of money, identified Australian coins and notes, and explored the people and animals featured on them. This term, the students are also learning about writing a narrative and each week will focus on a different component of a narrative.

In Phonics, the Preps will continue to consolidate their knowledge of the digraphs: 'ch,' sh' and 'ng.' They will begin to learn about morphology, through the explicit teaching of base words and the suffixes 'ed' and 'plural s.' They will also learn the new high frequency words: 'into, now, came, oh, about, their, these'. Your child's classroom teacher will be working with them on the high frequency words that they have learnt so far this year (55 words, up to Set 10) and this week a sheet with these words will be sent home in your child's home-reading folder. Words that your child can read correctly will be highlighted, so that you can see which words they are continuing to work on.

Mathematics

Students will be learning about 3D objects and volume. They will also be learning to say and write '-ty' numbers, such as twenty, thirty, forty.

Creative Connections

This term, we are trialling a 'rebrand' of Inquiry called 'Creative Connections.'

What Creative Connections is:

  • Application time where students use knowledge already explicitly taught (from Literacy, Core Knowledge units, picture story books or Maths) in a creative task to show or exhibit their learning.
  • Students have choice and voice within well-planned, structured tasks.

  • Timetabled for two sessions per week.

During Creative Connections this term, we have been building on the students' knowledge of money, goods and services from our Core Knowledge unit, and the students have been creating shops and goods to sell and using play money to purchase items from one another's shops.
