5/6 Camp at Log Cabin Camp
On Monday, the 6th of October, the 5/6 cohort went on a four-day camp to Log Cabin Camp, Creswick, Victoria.
On the first day, we went to Sovereign Hill for a fun day full of activities. When we arrived, the 5/6 students split up for the day to participate in activities such as gold panning, Brown’s Confectionery, the smelting house and the education hall. We learned about artefacts and how to write like a student in the 1850s, with nib pens and copperplate cursive. A highlight for us was holding a 3kg gold nugget that was worth around $500,000. After we completed our activities, we had free time to roam around and go into any of the shops that were open to purchase things. When we had completed our shopping, we got to play in the park nearby until the buses came. We headed back to the campsite for three more fun days of activities and chaos.
During camp, each activity taught us new skills and values. We learnt about stepping out of our comfort zones and trying new things at the zipline. Courage helped us to go on the giant swing, which was the biggest one we have had so far out of all the camps we have been on. Leadership, teamwork and communication helped us complete the milk crate stacking challenge. We learnt about trust while going on the leap of faith. Some of the courses were challenging and required us to work together and use problem-solving. The initiative course helped us to learn to work together. For one challenge, we had to stack all the tyres onto a separate pole without putting a smaller tyre on top of a bigger tyre. When we were able to do it, our team felt very proud of ourselves.
On our second night at camp, we played a night game called Four Corners. The four hiders were Aednat, Aarya, Ayaan and Justin. We each got either a hole punch, stapler, red or green pen. The four hiders got time to hide before the three cutters and the rest of the students came out. Three out of the four hiders were found - Aednat, Aarya and Justin. Ayaan, however, was the only one not found by the end of the game.
On the final night of camp, we had the disco. We were allowed to put in three song suggestions for the disco. There were games to win prizes and a dance-off. It was a very enjoyable night for all of us.
We would like to thank the teachers Michael, Sam, Blair, Shelly, Jennie, Kayla, Erin, Niamh, Catherine and Christina for taking the time to organise and take us on this amazing camp. We would also like to thank the parents Frank, Matt and Ruth for volunteering to come to camp with us.
Finally, we would like to thank both the Log Cabin Camp and Sovereign Hill staff for the amazing experience.

Congratulations to our Division Finalist students
Term 4 has seen a number of OPS students participate in the Monash Waverley Division Finals. These students earned their place by winning their event or sport at the Oakleigh District level earlier in the year - an impressive achievement in itself.
Girls Basketball
The girls’ basketball team travelled to Nunawading Basketball Stadium, where they competed in three games against some very talented schools. After a tough start in the first game, the team found their rhythm and played some fantastic basketball. While they weren’t able to record a win, they pushed the eventual champions, Mount View Primary, right to the final buzzer in their last match. Congratulations to all the players on a great season and for representing Oakleigh Primary School with such determination and teamwork.
Boys Hot Shots Tennis
Hot Shots Tennis is a new pathway program for primary schools, played on smaller courts with modified rules to encourage fast and fun games. On a warm Monday, nine OPS boys represented the school proudly, playing seven matches against schools from across the Monash Waverley District. After a challenging opening game, the boys found their rhythm, recording several wins throughout the day. They finished 5th overall - an outstanding effort for Oakleigh Primary’s first appearance at this competition. Well done to the team on a fantastic day of tennis!
