Canonization of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati and Blessed Carlo Acutis

On Sunday, 7th September, Pope Leo XIV canonized Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati and Blessed Carlo Acutis at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Pier Giorgio Frassati, born 1901 in Turin, Italy, was admired for his deep spirituality, love for the poor and enthusiasm for life. A member of the Dominican Third Order, he served the sick through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He died at age 24 after contracting polio.

Carlo Acutis, born in 1991, raised in Milan. Concerned that teenagers were spending so much time on the internet, playing video games and losing touch with reality, he worried about the scourge of pornography and cyber bullying and didn't think taking pictures of oneself and constantly putting them on social media was a healthy thing, because it represented a kind of idolatry of self. He thought all the attention should be on God and not on ourselves. Blessed Acutis used his tech skills to evangelize and set up a website on Eucharistic Miracles. Dying of leukaemia in 2006 at age 15, at his funeral the Church was full of poor people, because Carlo had secretly been helping them with food and sleeping bags. He has become known as "God's influencer," the "Cyber Apostle of the Eucharist" and the "Patron Saint of the Internet."

The Season of Creation

Monday 1st September was World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. Pope Leo has issued a message for the day titled "Seeds of Peace and Hope". In it, he encourages us to take action to protect our damaged Earth and all those who live on it, especially those who are poor and vulnerable. The World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation begins the Season of Creation which runs through to the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, October 4. It is an Ecumenical celebration of our Christian commitment to caring for Earth and all who live on it.
