Around the College

Socktober
On 4 September, the Year 10 Youth Ministry students attended Mount Saint Joseph's Altona for the launch of Catholic Mission's Socktober and their 2025 mission in Zambia.
Students celebrated through a liturgy and activities the God given task of awareness and fundraiser for Zambia. Over the coming months, the classes will design, organise and run activities for the College using secondhand socks made into soccer balls for competitions. The aim is to generate $250 to give to the mission.

E-Sports Tournament
On Friday, 12 September, five students from Nazareth College competed in the annual Silverton Primary School Mario Kart Grand Prix. Since the inception of the Nazareth College eSports League, this is the first time students have come together to participate in an eSports interschool competition.
The students were placed into teams of two, one racing and the other relaying important information, which turned out to be a crucial role for the highly competitive atmosphere. Students exhibited great collaboration skills, sportsmanship to other players, and showed a fantastic level of engagement for the entire day.
Students were also treated to a presentation from the Alannah Madeline Foundation, a Government endorsed eSafety provider, on the importance of playing safe on the internet and how respond if something happens.
The event finished with a tense grand final with Nazareth Team 1, consisting of Alex Kelly and Kelvin Pham, coming in fourth place, with Liam McAleer, Ryan Chan and Diego Jong showing their enthusiastic support. I congratulate these students on being wonderful representatives for the College and their participation in the Nazareth eSports League.

Monopoly Dreams Interactive Experience
Year 12 Accounting and Economics students recently enjoyed an exciting excursion to Monopoly Dreams in Melbourne CBD, where learning met fun in an interactive setting.
Students immersed themselves in the world of Monopoly, exploring how the classic board game translates into real-world financial and economic decision-making.
Throughout the day, they developed skills in money management, budgeting, investment, and accounting concepts, while also working collaboratively to solve challenges.
The experience gave students a practical and engaging way to see how financial choices impact outcomes — both on the game board and in real life.
Teachers praised the program for bringing textbook concepts to life and helping students strengthen their understanding of core accounting and economics skills.
It was a valuable day out that blended learning with entertainment, leaving students better equipped with the financial literacy needed for their future studies and careers.

HEALTH & PE WEEK
HPE Week ran once again this year in the first week of September with the focus being Good for Children, Good for Schools and Good for Communities.
We again offered students and staff free fresh fruit throughout the week to promote including fruit in their diet. Aiming to balance the energy dense foods, so often high in sugar and fat, that are targeted at teens and adults alike for convenience.
The highlight of the week was on Tuesday when the annual Staff versus Yr. 12 Dodgeball game was held. It was another strong demonstration of Dodgeball skill with the Staff Team, this time wearing an assortment of incredibly colourful head bands and wrist bands, defeating the highly regarded All-Star Year 12’s 2 – 0, with Game 3 considered a draw as it seemed to be never-ending. This was the third year in a row the staff have taken out the title and bragging rights.
Most importantly, it was played in a great spirit and everyone involved had a lot of fun. We also ran some competitions for the fastest boot of a soccer ball won by Khai Nguyen with 108 kph. Caleb O’Brien won the Basketball shoot out with 16 hoops in 30 seconds and Jonathan Arena winning the AFL Superboot with the longest kick.
Congratulations to all these winners.

Year 10 Cake Decorating Incursion
Year 10 Food Technology classes have recently been working on designs for a mud cake design brief. They needed to design a cake to be covered in ganache or buttercream, to have colourful decorations and be completed to look impressive.
The students baked their cakes one lesson and then completed an incursion where they decorated their cakes over three continuous periods. This is a challenging task due to a limited time and it is not easy to produce great looking cakes unless you have learnt the skills. However, all students put a lot of effort, patience, and work into their designs. They were successful completing the brief and produced amazing cakes. A fantastic job by all students.
I would also like to acknowledge Ms Zoya Curcio for her invaluable assistance. Her exceptional cake decorating skills, along with her dedication in organising ingredients and tirelessly supporting the students, played a key role in helping them bring their designs to life.

VCE Japanese Experience
Matcha isn’t just any green tea — it’s cultivated under special conditions to create its trademark sweet-yet-bitter flavour, vibrant green colour, and that earthy aroma.
This month, our VCE Unit 1/2 Japanese Second Language students discovered how this powdered tea connects to one of Japan’s most famous traditions: 茶道 (Sadō), the tea ceremony.
On 16 September, students engaged all five senses as they explored this centuries-old custom. After watching a demonstration, they whisked their own bowl of matcha using a bamboo whisk called a chasen. With great care, the foamy tea was served to a partner, who followed the precise etiquette of admiring, rotating, and finally sipping from the teacup.
To balance the flavour of the tea, students also enjoyed dorayaki — sweet red bean pancakes beloved by children, and most famously, the robotic cat Doraemon.
A big thank you goes to Ms Terri Yoshida for organising the teacups, which allowed our students to have hands-on experience with this cultural tradition.
