STEM

Term 3 has been so much fun in STEM!
All of our students have been focusing their Science learning around Earth and Space, whilst integrating digital technologies and design into our experiments and projects!
Our Grade Preps, 1s and 2s have learned about Earth's resources, focusing on how water and plants are so integral to our environment. We investigated water sources in our day to day environments and planted seeds to watch them grow. We visited our school worm farm and learned about how composting can help to reduce food waste, whilst helping our gardens to grow. Students designed their own worm farm or compost bin, where they followed the Engineering Design Process to complete this. Students challenged themselves to digitally explain their design using a new app - Google Vids!
Our Grade 3s and 4s have been learning about Earth's resources, including water. They investigated The Water Cycle and how weather and climate have impacts on our land. We simulated our own water cycles in class, by creating condensation and rain (precipitation) using warm water, ice and cling wrap! Lots of predictions were discussed and our results were founded once we completed the experiment!
Students are currently working to design a new object that keeps a body of water clean and safe - we've seen some rubbish cleaning robots, sensors to detect pollution and submarines that detect rubbish too! So many great ideas!
Our Grade 5 and 6 students have been learning about weather, climate, natural disasters and geological changes. We simulated a cyclone, by undertaking a 'convection current' experiment. They have been working to using scientific vocabulary within their prediction and result explanations.
Students are currently working to design a new and improved house that will withstand conditions of a natural disaster or a sudden geological change, like an earthquake. They are following The Engineering Design Process to research, plan, test and improve their ideas.
It's been such a great term and we look forward to what Term 4 will bring! Biology is our Science focus and we will also be embedding coding and design into our learning too!
Have a wonderful break!
Regards,
The STEM Team!
