Belonging to Community and Culture – Reconnecting Over the Holidays

As the term draws to a close, the upcoming school holidays offer a valuable opportunity for students to rest, reflect and reconnect. At All Saints’ College, we understand that belonging to community and culture is essential for wellbeing, identity and the development of confident, grounded young people.

Jonathan Haidt, in his recent book The Anxious Generation highlights the decline of in-person, social and community-based experiences as a key contributor to rising anxiety and disconnection in young people. He argues that real-world connection, especially through shared traditions, face-to-face interaction and time spent outdoors or with extended family, plays a protective role in mental health and emotional development.

School holidays present the perfect chance to replenish the cup: to slow down, engage with culture, connect with family and participate in the rhythms of community life. Whether it is through celebrations, volunteering, storytelling or simply sharing a meal, these experiences ground young people in who they are and where they belong.

We encourage families to use this time to disconnect from screens where possible and reconnect with one another. In doing so, we support our young people in returning to school with a renewed sense of identity, connection and wellbeing.
