Curriculum Matters

Maths Explorer
Throughout this year we have had a group of Year 3 and 4 students who have been involved in the Maths Explorer Program as part of our Students Excellence Program.
The Maths Explorer Program allows students to collaborate with their peers and work together to make decisions about the way they explore a maths problem.
The primary focus of this program is to build students’ confidence and allow them to develop their skills in a non-competitive environment. It uses fun and relatable themes to showcase how problem solving strategies can be applied to a variety of maths problems and encourages students to work together to expand their knowledge and understanding.
The students have now completed the program and have had a lot of fun being involved.
Foundation
Foundation Science Show – A Fun and Educational Experience!
Our Foundation students recently enjoyed a fantastic science show filled with exciting demonstrations and hands-on learning! The show focused on the properties of air – students discovered that air is invisible, odourless, all around us, takes up space, and can exert pressure.
The presenter wowed the audience with giant smoke vortex rings, and students were amazed to see toilet paper flying through the air and beach balls levitating.
The show also explored the two types of electricity: flowing and static. Using a Van de Graaff Generator, we created super static electricity, watched confetti fireworks, and enjoyed a fun hair-raising demonstration!
It was a wonderful opportunity for students to see science in action, sparking curiosity and excitement for the world around them.
Level 1
Level 1 have had another busy and exciting fortnight of learning!
In Maths, we have been working on subtraction and exploring 2D shapes.
We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed a shape walk around the schoolyard, where students wrote down and drew the shapes they discovered in the environment.
Back in the classroom, we played shape bingo and created shape pictures, helping us see just how many shapes are all around us.
In Literacy, students have begun writing a book report on one of the much-loved Pig the Pug stories. We have been focusing on key elements from the story and working hard to present our reports neatly and thoughtfully.
In Inquiry, our focus on safety has continued, with students learning about bike safety and how to ride safely and responsibly. We will finish the term by turning our attention to the important topic of cyber safety.
It’s been wonderful to see students learning, creating, and applying their skills in so many engaging ways!
Level 2
Yesterday the Level 2 students had their first Adventure Day!
Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of activities that encouraged teamwork, problem-solving and trying something new. They flew down the flying fox, completed a photo scavenger hunt, practised their archery skills and worked together on the initiatives trail.
The low ropes course challenged their balance and coordination, while the human hungry hippos game had everyone laughing and cheering each other on.
It was a wonderful chance for students to enjoy learning outdoors, support one another and create lasting memories with their classmates.
Level 3
Our Level 3 students had a wonderful time visiting Polly Woodside in Melbourne as part of their Inquiry topic on the First Fleet.
Students explored what life was like on board a ship over 100 years ago and discovered the challenges sailors faced while travelling across the seas.
They enjoyed climbing aboard the ship, learning about the crew’s daily routines such as scrubbing the deck, and even trying out some hands-on activities that gave them a taste of life at sea.
It was an exciting and memorable experience that brought their learning to life and helped them make great connections to our Inquiry unit.
Level 4
This term, students have been busy putting their creativity and problem-solving skills to the test through our Shark Tank inquiry project.
Students identified real-world problems in our community and set out to design inventions that could make life better. Using the design process, they brainstormed ideas, conducted research, created written explanations and sketched detailed designs.
Students are currently building 3D models, reflecting on their work and considering how to improve their inventions. We can’t wait to see the final product of innovative ideas our young designers have developed.
Level 5
Day of the Notables
This week Level 5 students participated in ‘Day of the Notables’, an event where they dressed up as inspiring individuals and brought along three artefacts to represent their chosen person.
Student choices reflected diverse people from around the globe who have changed the world in unique ways.
In the lead up, students worked on their biography writing skills, presenting a slide show. On the day, they proudly presented their research, artefacts and costumes.
We all learnt many facts about each other’s chosen people!
Level 6
Our Level 6 students recently enjoyed an exciting excursion to Parliament House and the Melbourne Museum.
At Parliament House, students explored the different chambers and learned about how laws are made. They were also able to ask questions and gain a real-world perspective after meeting their local representative member.
At the Melbourne Museum, students engaged with a range of fascinating exhibits, from Victoria’s history.
