Melbourne Catchment Workshop

On Wednesday 10 September, the Environment Captains attended their Term 3 workshop of the Marine Ambassador Program exploring Melbourne catchments.

We visited Banyan Reserve in Carrum Downs where we witnessed the gross but fascinating reality of what ends up in our waterways - yes, we’re talking about litter traps being emptied. The experience left us with a new appreciation of how simple choices we make at school and home can have BIG consequences for our rivers, wetlands, and even the creatures living in our beautiful bays. We then transformed into wetland detectives, exploring invertebrate life, identifying frogs by their calls (ribbit!), and testing water to see just how healthy it really is.

Unfortunately, due to the weather we had to cancel the second activity at Frankston Yacht Club, where the intention was to complete a litter collection survey, examining what rubbish we found and what it tells us about human impact on our environment.

Our student ambassadors have returned ready to share their discoveries and inspire others to make positive changes - because protecting our planet starts with knowledge (and maybe a pair of gloves)!
