Respectful Relationships: an afternoon at Rostrevor College

On Wednesday 10 September, the Year 10s visited Rostrevor College for a Respectful Relationships afternoon. We had the chance to get to know and connect with the year 10 Rostrevor boys. The day was filled with fun, laughter and building connections. We started off the day with a sausage sizzle which the Rostrevor Exec kindly provided, followed by a presentation on being our authentic selves and respecting one another. We then headed to the oval for a ‘walk and talk’ where we each got to partner up with a Rostrevor boy. Once we mingled with one another, we moved off to our activities. These included Netball, Table Tennis, Futsal, Arts and Craft, Meditation, and Card games. This was lots of fun and a great way to strengthen bonds. We finished off the day with an intense quiz before saying our goodbyes. Thank you to Mr Hodkinson from Rostrevor College and Mrs Donnelly for organising this fun-filled day and providing the opportunity to socialise and build respectful relationships with our brother school.

English: Year 9 Students Inspired by Luka Lesson’s Powerful Poetry Presentation

On Tuesday, our Year 9 students had the unique opportunity to attend a presentation by acclaimed Australian poet and spoken word artist, Luka Lesson. Throughout the session, Luka shared his original works of poetry with the students and spoke about the power of language. His presentation was an excellent introduction into our next unit of work, Spoken Word Poetry.

Our students were delivered a dynamic poetry performance which contained thought-provoking messages and captivated the audience. Luka’s ability to blend rhythm, emotion, and meaning had a strong impact on the students. Throughout the performance Luka encouraged students to ask questions which led to an insightful exploration about his creative process, inspiration and sharing his experiences as a professional poet. Luka’s performance and honest engagement with the audience provided our students with a glimpse into the world of spoken word and gave students a deeper understanding of how poetry can be used as a powerful tool for expression and connection.

One of the key messages that students took away from the presentation was the power of words. Luka was able to convey how words can help us form connection and foster understanding. His poetry highlighted how storytelling and rhythm can amplify meaning, making abstract ideas and personal experiences both relatable and memorable.

Languages Week

This week, we have acknowledged Languages Week to recognise the richness and importance of language learning in today’s world. Our Language Week assembly was filled with evidence of learning as well as an exploration about the possibilities which can arise from the commitment to study a language. Our Senior School community was treated with music performances from our Year 7 Chinese class and Year 10 students, Mia L and Gracie C who delivered a memorable performance of the Italian song, ‘La preghiera’. We were also entertained by our French students who shared their cooking show video where they engaged in crepe making. We also had the privilege of hearing from Old Scholars, Alice Dawkins, Vivienne Borrillo and Emma Yen, who all took the time to share their passion for the ongoing study of languages. All three of our Old Scholars communicated the range of opportunities which have been presented to them through their study of a language.
