Learning in Year 6

Year 6 have had a busy and exciting term, filled with learning, creativity and collaboration. A highlight was the Bizarre Bazaar, where students showcased their innovation and teamwork by designing, marketing and selling their own products. It was wonderful to see the way they engaged with customers, used persuasive language, and worked with persistence and enthusiasm.
In the classroom, students have been exploring rich learning across all areas of the curriculum. This term, Year 6 students have been exploring the important theme of social justice through their writing. As part of our English program, they have been creating powerful narratives that highlight national and global issues of injustice, such as the lack of clean water, limited access to education, child labour and homelessness. By stepping into the shoes of characters around the world, students have been challenged to consider what life is like for those who face these struggles daily. Their stories not only build empathy and awareness but also encourage critical thinking about fairness, equality and human rights. Through this work, our students are learning that storytelling can be a powerful tool for change, helping to give a voice to those who are often unheard.
In Mathematics, Year 6 students have been exploring a range of engaging and practical concepts. They investigated transformations and created their own tessellating designs to demonstrate translations, rotations and reflections. The Cartesian plane proved to be a highlight, as students enjoyed plotting co-ordinates and seeing how patterns and positions could be represented visually. A strong focus was also placed on money, where students applied their problem-solving skills to real-world scenarios. They calculated totals, worked out the correct change from purchases, and developed strategies for checking their answers. These activities not only strengthened mathematical fluency but also built confidence in applying maths to everyday situations.
Alongside their classroom learning, students have just completed a 9-day swimming program, developing both skills and confidence in the water. Looking ahead, there is a buzz of excitement as Year 6 prepare for their school production in early Term 4—an opportunity to showcase their creativity and teamwork on stage.
As leaders of the school, Year 6 continue to show great maturity, setting a positive example for younger students. Their commitment, teamwork and kindness are evident in the classroom, in the yard and during special events. We are very proud of all that Year 6 have achieved so far this year and look forward to the continued growth and success of our students.
