Learning in Year 5

Year 5’s loved school swimming, especially those who do not frequently get the opportunity to swim. Everyone showed improved skills over the lessons and enjoyed socialising with each other in a different learning environment.

Hooptime – some of our stars and up and coming basketball players teamed up with the grade 6’s for a busy day of basketball. After 5 round robin games the finals were fought out between 2 Great Ryrie teams.

Excursion to bowling and Holey moley Eastland – The students completed an earn and learn unit in integrated this term. This excursion was their earned reward for ‘saving’ money they earned by being productive students. At the start of the unit, students created job descriptions outlining all the responsibilities of being a grade 5 student. They signed an employment contract and were paid weekly for their effort. Throughout the term, they we required to deduct fixed and variable expenses incurred and learned the value of hard work and saving. The enjoyed learning the purpose of budgeting and what taxes are for. They connected these real life skills to the impact it has on themselves personally and for the wider community.

Leadership speech writing has commenced. This process is very important for their journey into Grade 6 and although daunting they are coming up with some very inspirational speeches to present on Speech Night (Wednesday 29th October)

Excitiment is boiling over for Shrek and 5B won the coveted whole school singing comp that Mrs Murray has been running to engage the students to learn their songs and perform them to their best standard.
