Learning in Year 4

The Year 4 students have had an action packed Term 3!

They’ve taken part in swimming lessons, celebrated Book Week, rehearsed tirelessly for the school production, aiming high for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. On top of that, some have challenged themselves in ICAS and the Maths Olympiad, showcased their talents in the vocal showcase, and enjoyed a wide range of class projects, hands on learning activities, and special events along the way.

Big thanks to all of the families for being on top of all of the events occuring and a special shoutout to the parent helpers during swimming!

Literacy

The Year 4 students have been hard at work creating their very own chapter books this term. Using the writing process, they have developed engaging introductions, exciting build-ups, challenging problems, and satisfying conclusions and resolutions. Along the way, they have focused on incorporating sizzling starts, tightening the tension, and adding dynamic dialogue to bring their stories to life. We have also enjoyed word work games to consolidate our spelling rules knowledge from our weekly spelling words.

Maths

This term, our Year 4 students have been busy learning about fractions. They have explored how different fractions can be equal (for example, ½ is the same as 2/4), practised counting in halves, thirds and quarters, and learned how to represent these on a number line. Students have also started to see how fractions connect to decimals, especially with tenths and hundredths.  Learning about fractions helps children build important life skills such as cooking, measuring, sharing fairly, and understanding money.

 Helping with Fractions at Home

  • Cooking together –  measure ingredients using cups and spoons, and talk about halves, quarters, and thirds.

  • Sharing food – Cut fruit, pizza, or toast into halves or quarters, and ask questions like, “If we cut this in half again, what fraction will we have?”

  • Money talk – Show how 50 cents is ½ of a dollar, or how 25 cents is ¼.

  • Number line practice – Draw a simple number line at home and mark out halves and quarters together.

  • Card & dice games – Use playing cards or dice to make fraction challenges (e.g., roll two dice and make a fraction).

  • Online Fraction Games

Wellbeing

This term, we explored what makes students similar to and different from others, and learned that anyone, regardless of gender, can have different interests and strengths. They examined how gender roles are shown in traditional fairy tales and compared them to modern stories and films. They discovered that it is okay to like different things and choose roles that suit them, no matter their gender. They also reflected on how peers might put pressure on each other and practised ways to respectfully challenge unfair expectations. Throughout the term, Year 4 students learned about the difference between rights and responsibilities, identified their own, and recognised the people in their lives who help protect their rights.
