Thinkers

This month, we are celebrating the Thinkers in our learning community — those curious minds who use critical and creative thinking to approach challenges with confidence and care.

In the PYP, Thinkers are described as students who “exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognise and approach complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical decisions.” But what does this look like in our classrooms?

 Thinkers in Action

  • In the Inquiry Cycle: Our students demonstrate thinking when they ask deep questions, make connections across disciplines, and reflect on their learning.

  • In Maths: Thinkers explore multiple strategies, justify their reasoning, and embrace productive struggle.

  • In Literacy: They analyse texts, infer meaning, and consider different perspectives.

  • In the Playground: Thinkers solve social problems, negotiate rules, and show empathy in decision-making.

A Whole-School Culture of Thinking

From Prep to Year 6, we are building a culture where thinking is visible, valued, and celebrated. Whether through provocations, collaborative problem-solving, or reflection of our learner profile attributes, our students are growing into thoughtful, ethical decision-makers.

Everyday Moments Matter

Whether it’s during dinner conversations, car rides, or bedtime stories, every moment is a chance to grow a child’s thinking skills. By encouraging curiosity, reflection, and reasoning, you’re helping your child become a confident, thoughtful learner.

How we organise ourselves

Central idea: Government systems impact the citizens of a country

Rebecca and Harriet

When have you been thinkers recently at Beaumaris North?

Harriet

At the moment, we have been learning a lot in our new unit of inquiry about politics. There has been a lot of new information to learn and understand. Understanding the structure of our government and other governments. Learning about our notable Prime Ministers.

Rebecca

We have also been having to be thinkers as we create our own countries. We have had to think about the right name for our countries. We have had to think about the population and the housing that our country has. It has been a lot of fun and a lot of thinking.

How the world works

Climate and the type of materials available determine the structures that can be built.

When have you been thinkers recently at Beaumaris North?

Vivaan

Yesterday we had cubby house day. We have been learning about building. I was in a group with my friends, and our cubby was not working, it kept on breaking. Then we had to be thinkers, and we moved to some different boxes to make our cubby work. It was lots of fun.

Hazel

When we did cubby house day, ours wasn’t working at the beginning as well. I was with my friends, and we had decided to do some of it under the table. There were some other boys who were going to be our neighbours. Our cubby kept on falling down. So, we were thinkers, we got Mrs Gibbon, and she helped us with some tape. We told her where we needed it to go to help and it turned out being something really cool.
