Year 6 News

Exhibition
In class we have been exploring artefacts relating to global problems such as deforestation, youth crime and poverty. Students have brainstormed a range of topics and begun researching one that they feel passionate about. These passion projects will form the basis of their exhibition.
This semester, the Year 6s have started a new unit of inquiry Sharing the planet and we will be doing our PYP exhibition. It is about a world issue that we have to research so we will be learning and researching about our topic.
We will have to use our communication skills soon as we will be placed in small groups with others who are working on the same topic. We are presenting our completed task in Term 4, so we have from now until then, with some sessions each week, to pull our piece together.
Then when the date comes around, we’ll be presenting to our parents and the rest of the school.

For inquiry in year six we have been focusing on artifacts and how problems can lead to global problems. Some artifacts we researched include plastic bags, QR codes, prostatic legs and many more. Some global problems we researched were drug addiction, youth crime, alcohol addiction and many others.

Olympiad, ESV and VHAP
This term, select students have been extending their learning through the Emerging Sciences Program (ESV) and the Victorian High Achievers Program (VHAP) and Olympiad. These students have taken time out of the classroom to explore and improve their understanding of complex topics.
Olympiad is a high-level math problem solving competition which a number of students in the year level do. As part of our training we get a sheet of 5 questions and have 30 minutes to complete as much as we can. Once the times up, we have to hand the sheet in and we find out if we got them correct the following week. We practice and prepare regularly for the main test that is this Wednesday.

In semester one some students from the year six cohort participated in ESV (Emerging Sciences Victoria). In ESV students chose a science that they wanted to learn more about and then attended sessions online twice a week. Some of the sciences that people learnt about were Astrophysics, Biotechnology, Medical Physics, Neuroscience and Sustainable Technology.
We all had so much fun learning about our chosen science. Along the way we had to complete tests about the content that we had learnt about. The program was run by the John Monash Science school.
Even though we had to give up our lunch or recess we all felt it was worth it.

ESV is an extension program that allows students to explore different sciences such as Medical physics, Astrophysics, Sustainable Tech, Bio Tech and many more. These lessons encompass many different theorems, formulas and equations for the calculations of many things related to these different topics, and is a huge opportunity to expand your knowledge. It’s a year 9 and 10 course, so select few get picked to participate. It is also expected you catch up at home, if you miss any lessons or simply need to finish assigned homework. I highly recommend ESV, especially if you’re interested in sciences and wish to work in the scientific field when you’re older.

Vhap is a high ability program where kids learn about extended parts of a either English or Maths. Each week we log onto a zoom get taught by a teacher online with 10 other kids from other schools. He asks us questions and teaches us one topic per lesson and we focus on that for a week. This year I’m in the English stream and in the last lesson we learnt that authors attempt to make you feel what the character in the book is feeling. We had to write a paragraph and learnt that there are 21 senses that us humans have, and authors use as many of them to make it feel real.

District Athletics
The school athletics carnival is for grades 4-6, everyone gets a chance to compete in all the events, if you get 1st or 2nd you may go to districts, but it depends on the other groups in your years score.
I came 2nd in my group for triple jump luckily Sophie didn’t want to go to districts for triple jump, so I got the chance to go instead.
On 1st of September some students went to district athletics. To get into districts you have to be in the top 2 fastest for your event. There are 4 different groups in each year level, year 4 boy’s group 1, year 4 boy’s group 2 and the same for the girls and each year level.
I came 3rd on the day of districts coming just behind my friend Emily from Beaumaris primary, and Alice from Beaumaris primary, Alice was very good on the day, she even beat the seaside record! The day was so fun, good job to everyone that got to districts and good job to people that got through to division.

On Monday, the 1st of September, was districts athletics. It was held at Duncan Mackinnon, with 8 schools participating. Those schools were: Beaumaris, Beaumaris north, Brighton, Brighton Beach, Black rock, Sandringham, Sandringham east and finally Hampton. All of the schools did a great job, but in the end Beaumaris North won, just a few points ahead of Hampton primary. The year 4 and 6 girls relay teams both came 2nd. The whole day was very fun, and everyone did great in their events.

Memoirs
3 weeks ago, year 6 started their memoirs. Memoirs are a personal biography of our schooling. It's a memory book. We have just finished prep and are moving on to year one.
Firstly we did a brainstorm about all the things we remember about prep which brought back a lot of memories. We have a memoir matrix where we pick one writing genre for each year level. For example, things like make a crossword, diary entry and poetry. We then put it in our album along with photos.
Once we complete all of our year levels we will have a wonderful memory album of our schooling. So far our memoirs have been really fun and a throwback to the past.

In year six we have been working on our memoirs and have been sticking down many photos of our primary school memories. We are spending lots of time colouring sticking and choosing photos to go in our memoirs. My memoir is full of memories from prep and year 1 since we spend two weeks on each year level. Soon we will be moving on to year two.

In year six we have been enjoying working on our memoirs and have been sticking down many photos of all our primary school memories from prep to year 6! The year 6 cohort have been spending a lot of hard work creating them! We spend 2 weeks on all years we are not up to year 1 and people are up to all different stages in it!
