SCIENCE NEWS

Our junior science students have been enthusiastically exploring a variety of fascinating topics this term, engaging in hands-on activities and deepening their understanding of the natural world.

Year 7 – Motion and Forces

Year 7 students have been investigating the dynamics of motion and forces, focusing on the difference between contact and non-contact forces. Some of the most exciting moments included experimenting with the Van de Graaff generator to demonstrate static electricity and launching bottle rockets to observe the effects of gravity in action. These interactive experiences have helped bring scientific concepts to life and sparked great curiosity among the students.

Year 8 – Structure and Function of the Human Body

Our Year 8 classes have just begun their exploration of the human body, starting with the skeletal and muscular systems. To complement classroom learning, some classes ventured outside to brainstorm by drawing the organs of the human body using chalk. They also participated in a lively skeletal system relay race, where teams competed to correctly name and locate key bones. This active learning approach has been both educational and fun, reinforcing their understanding of human anatomy.

Year 9 – Chemistry to the Cosmos

Having recently completed a chemistry unit, Year 9 students are now diving into the vast and intriguing world of the Universe. They will be studying the relative size of objects in space, exploring the Big Bang Theory, and learning about the lifecycle of stars. This exciting topic promises to inspire awe and wonder about our place in the cosmos.

Year 10 – Depth Studies and Biology

Year 10 students have just submitted their Depth Study assessments, where they independently selected scientific projects, designed experiments, and produced detailed reports on their findings. This task showcased their scientific inquiry skills —congratulations to all for their hard work! They have now begun a new unit on Biology, focusing on DNA structure and the inheritance of traits, setting the stage for a fascinating study of genetics.
