Senior Students Woodwork Term 1

SSI built birdhouses over a full 10-week project, showing persistence, teamwork, and pride in their work.
Students worked carefully through each stage of the build, including identifying parts, measuring, assembling, sanding, and finishing. They added their own creative touches by wood burning, engraving, painting, and decorating, making each birdhouse unique and personal.
A number of students also chose to donate their birdhouses to support habitat restoration in areas affected by the Victorian bushfires—highlighting the importance of giving back and helping bring nature back over time.
Well done, SSI, on your hard work, creativity, and community-minded approach.
SSF created a picnic bench using timber from a Spotted Gum tree that was cut down on the front oval in 2021. A qualified arborist attended the school, and a portable timber mill was brought on-site so the log could be milled into usable boards. Students supported the process by assisting with preparation and clean-up, and the remaining waste timber was mulched, making the project environmentally friendly and low-waste. Students then selected suitable pieces based on size and appearance, dressed and prepared the timber, and worked together to design and assemble the bench.
This sustainable approach has given the timber a second life, and the finished picnic bench will be placed outside SSF for use at lunch times and during Coffee Club for years to come.
