Explore the Learning in Foundation
The Foundation students have been amazing and have begun the year with so much enthusiasm. They have been listening well and following the instructions. We are so proud of their efforts, especially towards the end of the day when tiredness can set in.
Term Overview
Literacy:
This term we will be introducing the Foundation students to Sounds Write. Sounds Write is a structured synthetic phonics programme based on the Science of Reading. It teaches the letter/spelling - sound correspondences in an explicit and structured way. Your child will be focussing on a set of sounds each week and will build on adding new sounds each fortnight as they learn the initial code and build words.
Writing - Preps have been learning about their writers notebook. They are beginning to understand the steps we will be taking when using the notebooks:
Think - I can come up with an idea to write about
Draw - I can draw a picture of my idea
Label - I can write letters or words for parts of my picture
Write - I can use the labels to write sentences
Share - I can share my writing with my friends
Numeracy: This term we will be learning about number, duration of time (days of the week), order, patterns and counting.
Inquiry:
Throughout this term’s learning we will be exploring the question, ‘How can I be a positive member of Barwon Heads Primary School?’
They will be investigating this through:
- Identifying their role in the classroom
- Identifying appropriate behaviours in the classroom
- Understanding how their words and actions
- Developing a growth mindset
- Learning how to ask questions and the difference between a question and a statement
Positive Education:
This term the students will begin to explore the 24 VIA Character Strengths as part of our wellbeing program. We will be focusing on a character strength each week.
Research has shown that developing an understanding of Character Strengths can have a significant, positive impact on people’s lives. Using Character Strengths can help to improve relationships, resilience and wellbeing.
For the past 3 weeks we have had wonderful discussions about the zones of regulation - this identifies how we are feeling. The students have certainly been using their character strength Persistence this week, trying very hard and not giving up.
Buddies
The Preps enjoy spending time with their buddies, the grade 6 students have been a wonderful help.
