There has been so much going on in our garden this year and our grade 3/4 students are fortunate to have Deidre, Margaret and a team of volunteers, both parents and community members, to enhance the experience of our students in the garden every Thursday morning. Other year levels also benefit from our garden.
Some of the happenings in the garden include:
- lots of preserves to be processed for sale at the school fair next month
- new food cubes which have been a wonderful addition to the Edible Space, producing masses of vegetables
- grade 6 have been processing their tomatoes (that they grew last year in grade 5) into passata. They will be saving seeds this coming week for the next group of grade 5 students to grow tomatoes later in the year.
- the new PIPS (Permaculture in Primary Schools) program has started in the year ¾ classes. Students are learning all aspects about growing food, by caring for the earth, caring for each other and sharing what we grow together. Students have made pickles and peach muffins with produce harvested from the garden. Waste management. Green Thumbs etc.
- the popcorn sown and grown by grade 1 last year, will soon be ready to harvest by grade 2 students.
- and finally, the new greenhouse is producing many curiosities, including things not usually grown in our climate such as dragon fruit, watermelon, luffa sponge, ginger and galangal!
The Prep and buddy sunflower meadow has been a garden of beauty, loved by students, staff and visitors alike. This is a rich learning resource across all levels at BHPS as you will see from these photos taken this morning.
