Writing:

This term in Writing, the Grade 6 students will focus on utilising voice, the structure of historical narratives, sequencing and flashbacks. Alongside this, students will develop characters, settings and plots for fiction and historical narratives. The unit will culminate in students producing a historical narrative from the perspective of a leader of their choice.

Reading:

This term in Reading students will be analysing characters, setting and plot and looking at how authors describe and introduce these into their stories. We will be reading the text ‘Storm Boy’ by Colin Thiele and comparing and contrasting his story to the digital versions, noticing how different authors present the same story. We will also be looking at non-fiction narratives and understanding the difference between fact and opinion and the way authors use vocabulary to enhance their writing. We will be taking literal notes and summarising the weekly BTN stories, which will also give students a platform to discuss with each other things that are going on in the world around them.

Numeracy:

Term One’s Numeracy learning will be mainly looking at and revising the core content of Number and Algebra and building on the students prior learning. Learners will develop their understanding of fluency with concepts, procedures and processes by using reasoning and problem-solving skills in various situations. Later in the term we will begin to turn our attention to Statistics and Probability by discussing and critiquing statistical reports in the media and Measurement and Geometry through unpacking straight lines and vertically opposite angles at a point.

Inquiry:

During the first term of the academic year, students will delve into the concept of leadership and what makes a leader worth following. Through this inquiry, students will explore the character strengths of past and present leaders, current leadership issues, and their own potential as leaders. By engaging in planning and implementing leadership goals, students will enhance their knowledge and understanding of Civics and Citizenship, as well as Personal Capabilities.

How parents can help their child at home:

  • Encourage students to complete their nightly reading and record in their diaries
  • Assist students with practicing their spelling words nightly
  • Students can complete optional Numeracy learning on My Numeracy via Essential Assessment
