Art

Amanda West

Students will start Term 1 by exploring the artworks of Vincent Van Gogh and use these as inspiration for their own creations, including a clay sunflower. While making the sunflower, they will develop modelling skills such as rolling a slab, cutting shapes, joining clay and drawing or printing to create texture. Students will explore the art elements of line, shape, colour and texture through a range of activities, including drawing, painting and construction. Students will have regular opportunities to share their artworks, as well as discuss and appreciate the art of their peers.

Auslan

Michelle Rees

In Term 1, students will continue to develop their understanding of Auslan. We will consolidate our understanding of deaf culture and look more closely at the five parameters of Auslan (handshape, orientation, location, movement and non-manual features). The topics we will cover this term include holidays, school signs, fingerspelling and Easter. In March, the 2024 Winter Deaflympics will be held. We will use this opportunity to look at the challenges facing deaf athletes and how accommodations can be made to make sport (and everyday life) more inclusive. As with last semester, the topics will remain the same across the school (except in Foundation) but the level of signs will differ. Every lesson will be very hands-on involving lots of games, songs and role-play. We will celebrate the school values of Kindness, Respect, Aspiration and Grit as we acknowledge our achievements as well as those of our peers.

Performing Arts

Peter Humphries

In Term 1, students will engage in various elements of drama and music. The focus for drama will include developing confidence in speaking and listening through cooperative games and using our imaginations as we explore various characters in fun scenarios. We will explore the musical concepts of beat, rhythm, pitch, and melody through singing, playing musical instruments, and movement. Our overarching goal is to learn about the performing arts while having fun and developing our creativity and teamwork skills.

Physical Education

Chris Steele

In Term 1, students will focus on developing and refining running, dodging and sequenced movement skills with correct action and a variety of speeds. Through fitness activity and games, they will engage in moderate to vigorous activities. Students will explain the contribution rules and procedures make to the safe conduct of games and activities. Students will also concentrate on skills specific to underarm throwing, catching, Bounceball (volleyball game), School Cross Country and athletics.
