CHILDREN CHATTER MATTERS

Pragmatics and Social skills - (From Vic Curriculum Personal & Social Capabilities)

Pragmatics and Social skills

Focus: Working effectively in a teams and problem solve

Teamwork is a necessary skill that provides children with the opportunity to form relationships, develop empathy and problem solve with others. Particularly in the younger years, this is done through role playing and imaginary play.

Playing games with your child that have clear roles and objectives (e.g. ‘Shops’ has a salesclerk and a buyer with the objective of ‘buying’ goods from the clerk) will help them develop negotiation skills (who will play each role and where to play) and problem solve (when the shop runs out of strawberries, or the buyer has no money). Making ‘problems’ occur during play will push your child to develop problem solving skills and use language to communicate this.

If your child is having difficulty, you may present them with different solutions to choose from or model the language they might use to help them negotiate the play. You do not need ‘toys’ for this activity; usually a few token items are enough, and the rest is imagination (e.g. a chair/bench/pillow to be the store table is enough to create the scene of a shop, the food/money can be imaginary).

Other great pretend games: vets, doctors, schools, restaurants, petrol station, zookeeper, mum and dad, sport coach and team, mermaids and pirates, wizards and witches.
