Mr Jim Noble, Assistant Head of College - Boarding
Many of the boarders took advantage of the recent Free Weekend to go home or head out on leave with family or friends. This scheduled break in the middle of Term 1 has been happening for many years; in fact I remember it well from when I was a boarder at Marist a very long time ago. The start of the year is always busy and having a longer weekend hopefully allowed the boys to catch their breath and get ready for the second half of the term.
For those boarders who stayed in over the weekend, there was the opportunity for a couple of sleep-ins, plus the chance to use the pool, weights room and gymnasium without the usual crowd. Our staff also ran outings to the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and the Walkabout Creek Wildlife Centre and Reservoir Centre over the long weekend. On Sunday morning, we also shared Mass with the parishioners at Mater Dei Church in West Ashgrove.
On Saturday night, it was also lovely to see our Year 12 boarders celebrate their Senior Formal. This much-anticipated event was held in a magnificent venue at City Hall and the boys all looked classy with the way they dressed for the occasion. Their arrival in a wide variety of flash vehicles was also quite a spectacle. The night went off particularly well and hopefully provided some great memories for the boys on this special occasion.
As we head into Week 6, there is Cyclone Alfred predicted to have an impact on South-East Queensland with very strong winds and plenty of rain expected. Please rest assured that the safety and wellbeing of every boy remain our highest priority and this will guide our planning. We understand that some boarding parents/guardians might make an early decision to transfer their son into the care of family or friends. If you feel this is right for your family, of course, we support you in this. Our residences and facilities will remain open for the boarders providing it is safe to do so and we will keep all families informed with regular updates.
