Lent and Project Compassion
As we journey through the Lenten season, we are reminded of the importance of reflection, sacrifice, and charity. This time of year is especially significant for our Catholic community as we prepare for Easter. One of the key initiatives during Lent is Project Compassion, an annual fundraising campaign run by Caritas Australia to support vulnerable communities around the world.
What is Project Compassion?
Project Compassion is a vital part of our Lenten observance, encouraging us to live out the Gospel values of love, compassion, and justice. The funds raised through this campaign help provide essential services such as education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods to those in need1. Each week of Lent, Caritas Australia shares inspiring stories of individuals and communities who have benefited from these programs, reminding us of the impact our contributions can make.
During Lent, all our students are called to think of ways to raise funds for those less fortunate than ourselves. At St Helena’s, each class will be running a fundraiser throughout Lent to raise money and awareness for Project Compassion and the important work Caritas does throughout the world, especially in areas less fortunate that where we live.
Lenten Practices for Families:
Lent is a time for spiritual growth and renewal. Here are some ways your family can observe Lent and support Project Compassion:
Prayer:
Set aside time each day for family prayer. This could include reading Scripture, praying the Rosary, or participating in the Stations of the Cross. Attend Mass regularly and encourage your children to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Fasting:
Teach your children the value of sacrifice by giving up certain treats or activities. This helps them understand the importance of self-discipline and empathy for those who have less. Consider fasting from technology for a day and spend quality time together as a family.
Almsgiving:
Encourage your children to donate a portion of their pocket money to Project Compassion. This small act of generosity can make a big difference in the lives of others. Participate in school or parish fundraising activities. Get creative with bake sales, car washes, or sponsored walks to raise funds and awareness.
Acts of Kindness:
Perform acts of kindness within your community. This could be as simple as helping a neighbour, visiting the elderly, or volunteering at a local charity. Create a "Lenten Kindness Calendar" with daily suggestions for kind deeds that your family can do together.
By embracing these practices, we not only grow closer to God but also strengthen our bonds as a family and community. Let us use this Lenten season to reflect on our blessings and extend our compassion to those in need.
