Prep Team News

with Caitlin & Georgia

Hello Prep families,

It has been a big week in Prep with the students completing their first full week of school. We are sure there will be many tired children this weekend. Thank you to those who were able to attend the Prep BBQ last week. It was lovely getting to chat to many Willy Primary families. There were lots of big smiles and happy faces, particularly when the icy poles were served!

Clean Up Schools Day

On Friday the 28th of February, Willy Primary participated in ‘Clean Up Schools Day’ as part of the Clean Up Australia Day initiative. It was wonderful to see the Prep students get out into the yard and pick up some of the rubbish that has accumulated so far this term. Following our clean up, we had some great discussions about the importance of trying to reduce the amount of rubbish we make, as well as taking our rubbish home or putting it in the proper bins at school. It was wonderful to hear many students share their ideas about why we need to care for Country by taking care of our rubbish. Thank you again to all the families who sent their students to school with gloves or tongs on the day.

Wellbeing Incursion

Our Preps experienced their first incursion this week. Cass and Alana came by to teach the students different ways that we can take care of our minds and bodies. The students practised deep belly breathing, a range of yoga poses and different meditation techniques. All of the students were really engaged and gave everything a go. Hopefully the Preps can use some of these techniques to help them calm down next time they are experiencing big emotions.

This term, all Preps will attend specialist classes. These include Visual Arts, Music, Kitchen Garden and Physical Education. Please see the weekly timetable below.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 6-7

Reading - Students will learn about appropriate reading behaviours, for example direction of print and caring for books. They will also discuss book features such as the front cover, pictures and text. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students begin the year learning single letter sounds, with our current focus being the /t/ and /p/ sounds. To help us remember these sounds, we have met Tim the turtle and Peter the penguin. There are songs about these characters available online, which you may like to listen to with your child at home or in the car:

Writing - Students are learning to write their name, correctly form letters, trace over a modelled piece of writing and copy it underneath. This week we are focusing on forming the letter ‘t’.

Numeracy - Students are learning to graph information about themselves, their classmates and their school. We are learning a range of maths games which they can play with a partner and help them practise their number recognition and ordering. They are also finding different ways to represent a number by starting our count to 100 Days of School.

Inquiry - Students are investigating how Willy Kids can be successful and engaged learners. Our Willy Kids foci across weeks 6 and 7 are being sociable and showing consideration.

Homework - Each Monday, students will be given an activity to complete at home that relates to our weekly sound focus. The activity in their ‘Home Learning Book’ will be collected each Friday. Homework in Prep should take no longer than 15 minutes.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Warm regards,

The Prep Team–Caitlin Sullivan (Prep S), & Georgia Grainger (Prep G)
