PREP NEWS

Dear Prep Families,

We’ve had a wonderful week in Prep, full of learning, exploration, and fun! Here’s what we have been up to:

Literacy

This week, we learnt the sounds /n/ for Nelly the numbat and /o/ for Oscar the octopus. Students have been practising identifying these sounds in words and blending them together when reading.

In writing, we have focused on nouns and verbs, helping students understand how these word types form sentences. We also introduced Little Learners Love Literacy decodable books, which are carefully designed to help students practise their phonics knowledge by reading simple, predictable texts. These books contain words made up of sounds that students have already learned, building their confidence and fluency in reading. We also enjoyed buddy reading, where students practised reading aloud to a partner, developing their oral reading skills and confidence.

Fine Motor

We have been refining our cutting skills in class! When using scissors, we remind students to:

  • Hold the paper with their helping hand and the scissors with their cutting hand.

  • Keep their thumb on top while cutting.

  • Cut slowly and follow the lines carefully.Practising cutting at home with different materials (paper, cardboard, straws) can strengthen hand muscles and improve coordination.

Maths

We have begun learning about subitising, which is the ability to recognise small groups of objects without needing to count them one by one. This is an essential skill for developing number sense and mental maths strategies.

We introduced subitising through dice games like The Very Crazy Caterpillar and Tenzi, where students quickly identified numbers on dice and matched them. Learning to subitise helps students with quick number recognition, addition, and building fluency with numbers.

Inquiry

Our discussions this week have focused on what makes a good learner and a good teacher. We explored classroom rules, expectations, and the importance of listening, asking questions, and showing respect. These discussions help students understand their role in the classroom community and develop responsibility for their learning.

Homework

Starting next week, students will bring home Little Learners Love Literacy decodable books as part of their reading homework. These books are designed to support the phonics skills we are learning in class.

Each student’s Mathletics and Reading Eggs login details have been glued into the back of their homework book. These online programs are a great way to practise maths and reading at home.

Reminders

  • No assembly this Friday due to NAPLAN and building works.

  • Please check your child’s bag for their homework book next week.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great week!
