A Message From Anna

Principal's Report

Due to NAPLAN testing, there will be no assembly tomorrow - Friday 14th March. Thank you for your understanding.

Bird Count

We now have 32 out of 40 Birds filling up the School-Wide Positive Behaviour Celebration Tree in the office area! Students have been displaying our school values - Ambition, Compassion, Courage & Creativity - at every opportunity this term, earning Egg tokens as acknowledgements of positive behaviour. They are enjoying trading every ten eggs for a Chick of the corresponding colour, then become very excited when ten Chicks get traded for a Bird!

Ground Works Update

The Storm Water works are continuing throughout March, but rest assured, NOT throughout NAPLAN tests. Our friendly builders have been very accommodating in ensuring they don't distract students from their tests.

As a result of the works, we will see an update to The Green. Given that it's such a well-used area and in need of levelling out, School Council have decided to go 50-50 with the Victorian School Building Authority in replacing it for new. We can't wait to see how fresh it looks in a couple of weeks!

THE BIKE SHED IS NOW OPEN (for now)!! While it may need to be closed for a few days in coming weeks, for now the Bike Shed is back in action!

Structured Play

Throughout Primary School, students learn a range of skills: from their ABCs to Cartesian Planes! They also learn how to socialise, problem-solve and play with other children; arguably some of the most important areas of learning for their age group!

At Box Hill North Primary School, we believe it is our job to support students in learning these important social skills, both in the classrooms and in the playground. We also believe it's important to teach students at their individual point of need, which means we teach students what they are ready to learn, even if they are ready for something different than their peers. As per our Multi-Tiered System of Support approach at Box Hill North, sometimes a student will require some Tier 2 interventions to ensure they are learning the skills they need.

Throughout Term 1, we have developed an approach called 'Structured Play' which will support a range of students to learn how to play structured games with their peers during Recess and Lunch times.

What is it?

Structured Play is teacher-facilitated activities at lunchtimes, providing Tier 2 Interventions to students who require additional support. We have consulted students about what kinds of activities they would like to participate in at lunchtimes, so we can provide specific activities and social teaching to these students during their play times.

Who will participate?

Students who have had some frustrations or struggles in the yard of recent times, as identified by staff recording incidents on Compass. The recording of these incidents provides staff with data to inform who might be struggling to find a suitable activity or social scene in the yard, and who would likely benefit from some extra support.  Students may benefit from a few sessions of Structured Play, or from a few weeks of Structured Play. We will do what we do best to determine the level of support required - assess and teach!

If you have any concerns or questions about Structured Play, please feel free to reach out!
