SUSTAINABLE HALLOWEEN
Ripponlea gets to really shine this Halloween knowing our environment is breathing a little easier with well over 50 Ripper children choosing to exchange and wear a recycled costume.
We are super thrilled that you chose to do this and we cannot wait to see you make a Thriller move at the parade this Friday. Also can’t wait to see just how our 5/6 kids who at the exchange were getting their creative mind on with great ideas to modify and up cycle available costumes.
With all the fun of costumes, decorations, and Halloween magic let’s not forget something that is truly frightening & that is that our fun can create a haunting amount of waste.
Not to put too much of a dampener on the spirit of Halloween - here are a few scary truths worth knowing…
- Most Halloween costumes are made from non-recyclable materials like polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Big tick if you are going second hand.
- Fake cobwebs might look spooky but they can trap native wildlife, especially as they’re nesting for spring. So please watch your cobwebs carefully if it’s in your garden and put away responsibly.
- Think of all those single-use items: buckets, decorations, lolly wrappers, party plates… most end up in landfill.
Don’t fear thou - Here’s a few things to keep Halloween eco-friendly:
- DIY your costume. Try crafting from what you already own, swapping with friends, get your costume from the Op Shop.
- Reuse or upcycle decorations. Use nature to create the creep factor - twigs, leaves, and straw instead of plastic.
- Skip single-use partyware- when Trick or Treating SAY NO to plastic plates, cups, and cutlery.
Let’s make this Friday a little less spooky for the planet - it’s the micro actions that make a significant change 🌏
