Year 4/5

Welcome back for term 2! Our students have had a fabulous start to the term and have settled in well.

Here is an overview of what we will be focusing on this term:

Reading/Knowledge Building

This term, we will be exploring ‘The Renaissance’. Students will focus on understanding information about this period of time and vocabulary. We will work on showing comprehension through discussions, making inferences, and responding to the text with both written and oral reflections. This will help deepen students’ understanding while enhancing their reading skills.

Writing

In writing, we will focus on enhancing sentence-level writing. Students will be exposed to a range of opportunities to focus on enhancing their writing at the sentence level. Explicit teaching around a range of engaging sentence structures, will prepare students to wow their readers in both fiction and nonfiction writing pieces. From here we will move on to paragraph structures, equipping students with a range of paragraph structures. Both of these units will give students the opportunity to refine their writing skills.

Maths

In maths, we will be focusing on fractions, identifying fractions of a collection and number, counting by fractions along with building their knowledge of improper and mixed numeral fractions. Students will use their knowledge of decimal numbers to represent a given fraction as a decimal. Stats and probability will be explored, consolidating their knowledge of chance experiments, collecting and displaying data and interpreting the results. They will begin to understand expressing probability as a fraction to tie in with our fraction unit. Fluency in recall of number facts, such as the timetables will continue throughout the term.

To engage us in our topic of ‘The Renaissance, students have been busy investigating Leonardo Da Vinci. We have learnt key information about this talented artist and his famous piece ‘The Mona Lisa’. Students have had the opportunity to mimic his talent through creating their own parodies of this piece, including face swapping their face on to Lisa’s using technology.
