Debating

The Year 12 Debating Team has made their grand entrance as Evans High School's first team to compete in the Premier's Debating Challenge. They competed against schools across the state, debating about important contemporary issues such as education and politics.

The Years 9 and 10 teams have just begun their debates, and we look forward to seeing how they progress in the competition.

Year 7

Year 7 students are currently studying the play ‘Honey Spot’ by Jack Davis, a First Nations playwright. They are having lots of fun reading the scenes together, creating their own dramatic interpretations of moments in the play and learning about dramatic techniques. They will be preparing an essay in class as their assessment task early next term.

Year 8

Year 8 are finalising their assessment task essays on Tim Burton’s film representation of the ‘outsider’ and then starting their new unit on the play ‘Stories in the Dark’ by Debra Oswald. This unit examines the fictional experience of two teenagers being caught in war and it raises awareness of the current realities faced by many families in the world today. It also examines the importance of storytelling and the positive impacts this can have during moments of uncertainty and crisis.

Year 9

Year 9 have just completed their essay assessment task on ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare in which they examined the impact that negatively seeking power over others can have on the quality of your life and your relationships with others. They are now beginning their study of the novel ‘Catching Teller Crow’ by Amberlin and Ezekiel Kwaymullina, which is an engaging thriller addressing issues of our colonial past from two First Nations voices.

Year 10

Year 10 have just completed their essay assessment task on poetry, in which they chose three poems from their class study to analyse. Students chose from topics of identity, war and conflict, and love and relationships to analyse how the emotions and experiences associated with those themes were represented in the class poems of their choice. They are now undertaking a study of several different types of short text through the topic of ‘consumerism’.

Year 12

Year 12 English Standard, Studies and EAL/D are progressively working through their modules and completing their assessment tasks. Students have been working well in class and are encouraged to keep up a regular routine of study and timed writing practice at home to prepare themselves for their upcoming Trial HSC exams next term.

English studies are currently completing a unit on travel in which they are building their skills in researching and planning an international holiday, and they will be writing a persuasive speech to convince their guardians to let them go on their planned holiday.
