CAREERS & VET – Term 2

It’s been a busy and exciting term in Careers, with students engaging in a range of activities and exploring different pathways for their future."

Year 10 Careers Program Update This term, the Year 10 Careers Program has continued to support students in exploring future pathways and identifying the steps needed to achieve their goals. Through career lessons, students have investigated school subject choices, EVET courses, ATAR requirements and pathway options such as university and TAFE courses. With subject selection taking place this term, the program played a key role in helping students make informed decisions about their senior studies and post-school opportunities.

Senior Student Support & Opportunities This term, individual career interviews commenced for Year 12 students to support their planning for life after school. These personalised sessions have helped students explore options, clarify their goals, and begin preparing UAC Early Entry applications.

Tertiary Open Days have also begun and will continue through to September. Visiting a campus allows students to explore facilities, connect with university staff and students, and get a feel for the courses they’re considering. A flyer with key dates and links has been shared in the Careers Google Classroom, and students are encouraged to attend the open days most relevant to their interests.

In addition, several students attended the Western Sydney Careers & Employment Expo at Sydney Showground, gaining valuable insight into career pathways, industry demands, and further education options. These experiences are an important part of informed decision-making and complement the guidance provided at school.

Start Your Future TAFE Taster Program This term, 18 Year 10 students have been participating in the Start Your Future program — a one-day-a-week TAFE taster course held over 8 weeks across various campuses. Students have explored hands-on learning in areas such as Commercial Cookery, Carpentry, Hair, Beauty & Nails, Plumbing, Automotive (Mechanical and Paint & Panel), Animal Care, IT/Cybersecurity, and Nursing. This valuable experience has allowed students to gain practical skills, explore potential career paths, and connect with peers from other schools.

Student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive:

  • “Best decision you could make.” – Liam & Byren (Carpentry)
  • “A fun, unique experience that’s educational.” – Katie (Animal Care)
  • “Fun, great experience, highly recommend!” – Mayas (Automotive – Paint & Panel)
  • It was such a fun learning experience that helped us develop our hairstyling and makeup skills. We met so many people and made lots of new friends!” – Chloe and Salma (Hair, Nails & Beauty)

Student Success Story – Electrical Apprenticeship Secured!

As part of the Educational Pathways Program, Rishav completed a two-week Pre-Apprenticeship Skills Course in Electrotechnology through NECA Apprenticeships at the Seven Hills Innovation Centre. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience, demonstrated strong capabilities, and has since secured an electrical apprenticeship with Endeavour Energy.

“The two-week pre-apprenticeship course by NECA was amazing. It has opened up so many different pathways for me and allowed me to explore different areas within electrotechnology. Completing it led to me being offered apprenticeships with both Endeavour Energy and Ausgrid — two of Australia’s largest electricity providers.” Rishav

A fantastic achievement — congratulations, Rishav!

VET at Evans High School

VET students have been busy at work this term and participated in a range of events whilst completing work placements as part of their industry-based learning.

Entertainment

Our Year 11 and 12 Entertainment students have been diving deep into the world of lighting and projection, and their creativity has truly shone through! Over the past few weeks, they've been learning the technical and artistic aspects of using projection in live performance. As a culminating task, each student created their own short video edit - which we then projected onto a cyclorama in our performance space. The results were fantastic: bold visuals, clever storytelling, and a real understanding of how projection can transform a stage. It's been amazing to see them bring together their technical skills and artistic vision so effectively. A brilliant effort from a very talented group!

Hospitality

Our Hospitality students have had a productive term, gaining hands-on experience as they completed their in-school service hours. They successfully catered for two Evans Restaurant lunch services, including a standout Filipino Cuisine buffet that was both vibrant and delicious. In addition, they continued to showcase their skills by running the Evans Café during our recent Open Night.

Our Hospitality students recently had the wonderful opportunity to attend a career session at Kingswood TAFE with renowned chef and restaurateur Luke Mangan and Mark Best, Amelia Birch and Big Sam Young. Meeting Chef Mangan in person was an inspiring experience, as he shared his journey to success in the hospitality industry and the many lessons he learned along the way.

Students were not only captivated by his story but also gained valuable insight into the wide range of career opportunities available in hospitality, from commercial cookery and event management to front-of-house roles and international placements. The session helped broaden their perspective and deepen their enthusiasm for pursuing a future in the field.

Students were also taken on a guided tour of the TAFE facilities, giving them a clearer understanding of the study pathways and training available to support their career goals.

We’re grateful to Kingswood TAFE and Chef Luke Mangan for offering such a rich and motivating experience to our students.
