Learning for Term 1, 2025

Across the school our timetable :

Our timetable is a bit different this year. We start our day with structured literacy and mathematics. These are important lessons and we need all our children to be in class and settled ready for learning. This is intensive skills that they will need to access their learning across the curriculum for the rest of the week.

Literacy and mathematics skills are also taught throughout an engaging and exciting middle block where we cover the curriculums.

Curriculum Coverage:

We cover each curriculum each term to ensure that our students are well informed across the curriculum. Our overarching theme influences our other curriculum and they link together. This year we have an overarching theme of Sustainability - Kaitiakitanga (Meaning Guardians of environment that we live in).

Key concepts for term 1 are: Maori people use the local area of Paremoremo as a resource. Being a Kaitiaki of the area we live in is important for Future generations.

Science: we will be exploring texture and structure of soil and the relationship between soil and water.

Technology: Students are learning about technological practice through developing a plan for sensory garden.

Social Science: We are learning about a Powhiri, Treaty of Waitangi - Te Tiriti at the beginning of the term. For the rest of the term we will be exploring how Paremoremo has changed over time and what natural resouirces the local area has access too. We will be developing our understanding of Hapori (community) learning through this curriculum subject.

Health: We are learning about the Hauora using the Whare Tapa Wha Health Model and studens will get an opportunity to look at their own families understanding of holistic wellbeing and create their own model.

PE: Swimming - please ensure your child brings their swimming togs.

Visual Arts: Using natural resources to create nature pictures and sculptures.

We have a school trip to Wataikere Ranges planned but this will happen in Week 1 of Term 2 due to bookings.

Structured Literacy: Each class spends the first block of the day focusing on structured literacy. A structured literacy approach is a highly explicit and systematic way of teaching the important components of literacy. These components include both foundational skills (e.g., decoding, spelling, handwriting and letter formation) and higher-level literacy skills (e.g., reading comprehension, written expression). We utilise the iDeal structured literacy program. Reading and writing lessons are also integrated into other areas of learning.

Mathematics: We are currently a Maths No Problem school. Which is a structure approach to learning mathematics, based on the concept that there is a sequence in which students need to learn mathematics. Each child is provided with their own workbook to use throughout the year to practice learning that they do with their teacher. We are using a lot of hands-on equipment to support the learning of new concepts and visuals are used within text books to help students learn new concepts. Mathematics is also brought to life within our curriculum blocks in which students explore real life situations that require mathematical and logical thinking skills.
