Grade 2
Hi Families of Grade 2,
What a lovely Term we have had so far, we are so proud of our Year 2s and what they have achieved. We are excited to share our learning with you. We hope all families and students have a wonderful Term Break.
Reminders:
Please ensure:
-That your child has their own tissue box at school they may use to help lower the spread of germs
-to pay and give consent for your child to attend our First Nations Incursion that will be next Term on Tuesday 29th of April.
Reading
We are excited to share the wonderful learning happening in Literacy this month! The students have been developing key reading and writing skills through engaging activities that encourage thinking, creativity, and communication.
Reading Focus
This month, we were working on:
📖 Predicting: Using clues from the title, pictures, and text to make informed guesses about what will happen next.
📖 Character Traits: Identifying and describing a character’s personality, motivations, and actions.
📖 Fluency in Reading: Practicing smooth, expressive reading with appropriate pacing and intonation.
📖 Making Inferences from Pictures and Text: Using details from images and stories to understand deeper meanings and emotions.
📖 Comparing Pictures and Text: Comparing different aspects of two books, such as structure, themes, and character development. This helps students understand how different authors approach storytelling and encourages deeper thinking about texts.
You can support your child at home by asking questions like:
"What do you think will happen next?"
"How would you describe this character?"
"Why do you think the author included this picture?"
Writing Focus
This term, our young writers are learning about procedural texts! These are step-by-step guides that explain how to do something. We are exploring different "How To" texts, such as:📝 How to make a fairy bread
📝 How to brush your teeth
📝 How to make a pasta necklace
Encourage your child to practice writing instructions at home. A fun activity could be having them write and explain "How to Play My Favourite Game" or "How to Make My Favourite Snack."
Here are some pictures of their experiences with making pasta necklace:
Maths
In Maths we have been learning about how to read an analogue clock, we made some cool paper clocks and loved singing the song "Tell the Time". We have been using our clocks to recognise and tell time to the hour, quarter hour and half hour.
We also learnt about the features of maps and how to read a map and give each other directions. It was a lot of fun creating a map of our classrooms and giving our friends directions using mathematical vocabulary.
SEL (Social Emotional Learning)
In SEL, students revisited our school values and focused on acts of kindness, mindfulness, and emotional regulation. They engaged in activities like yoga and mindful coloring, which helped them develop self-awareness and positive social interactions. These lessons have helped students build a caring and supportive classroom where everyone feels valued.
Inquiry
Over the past four weeks, our students have been exploring how life, learning, and technology have changed over time through our Inquiry lessons. They investigated how people used to celebrate special occasions, how schools and household technologies have evolved from the past to today, and how timekeeping has changed by comparing the Kulin Nation calendar with the Gregorian calendar. Students also discussed what schools might look like in the future and imagined new technologies to enhance learning. It was incredible to see their creativity as they designed futuristic inventions like floating desks, flying school bags, small robot tutors to assist with spelling, and classroom-cleaning robots. To bring these ideas to life, they are now creating posters and dioramas for a classroom gallery walk to share their visions.
