Year 5/6 Team News
with Christina, Emma, Molly, Bianca I, Bianca R, Matt & Brittlee
As we approach the final weeks of the year, we have many things going on across the school to be aware of. Please familiarise yourself with the calendar below. This also includes being across events that require permission and payment via Compass.
Last week, our Year 6 students who will be attending Willy High School in 2026, headed off for a special visit to the school. They were greeted by ex-Willy Kids who showed them the ropes! They were treated to a tour of the grounds, a science lesson, a virtual reality (VR) technology lesson, and some practise with a combination locker lock in the library. This visit is something that takes place thanks to the community of practice between our 3 local schools: Willy Primary, Willy North Primary and Willy High. It helps them prepare for the Statewide Transition Day on Tuesday 9th December, where they will join the entire year 7 cohort for 2026 for the entire day, as well as the move from primary to secondary school.
Here are some great snaps from last week’s visit: (attached)

We will also be celebrating the end of the year with a Kris Kringle in each class. Notes will be coming home for all students to choose to opt in or out of the event. This will take place in the last week of school. Further details to come.
What’s Happening in the Classroom in the next Fortnight?
Starting in Week 8, classes will be introduced to Learning Contracts. This program allows students to set themselves goals, arrange their day to include a variety of maths and literacy concepts and ensure they manage their time effectively. It also allows classroom teachers to meet with individuals and small groups to target any concepts that have not been established.
Literacy: In Writing, students have a clear goal to complete their personally written and published Buddy Book that they will gift to their junior buddy on Buddy Ice Cream Day. In Reading, classes are using their chosen class novel as the main resource to revise various concepts. Students also have a bank of literature response tasks within their learning contract to complete.
Numeracy: Within the Learning Contract, students have the option to complete either a project or single problem-solving tasks. The project will span across multiple lessons, requiring students to design, measure and calculate costings associated with designing a shopping centre.
Inquiry: To complete our unit, students will participate in a Board Game Day, where they will have the opportunity to play other groups games. They will evaluate the game using the project rubric, with a clear focus on the effectiveness of the rules, game design, and inclusion of the electrical circuit/s. Students will also complete a Kahoot/Blooket to demonstrate their understanding of energy sources and electrical circuits.
Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: In weeks 9 &10, Willy Kids are ambitious. We will explore what it means to strive for something and the difference between aiming for things in the short term or long-term future. We will reflect on goals from this year and look to make new ones for both the short term and long-term future. In RR, students will commence their work on help seeking. This is a great segway from the wonderful program and discussions from the facilitators from Sex Education Australia. Students will explore and evaluate the places and people they can seek help from, especially as they begin to mature and undergo changes in their physical and mental being.
