Year One Team News

It’s hard to believe that we only have 3 weeks left of the 2026 school year. The time has certainly flown by, especially with so many fun and memorable events and activities. There was a lot of excitement for the Year 1 Dinner two weeks ago, and it was wonderful to see how responsible and respectful all students were, whilst also having a lot of fun! Sunday saw the return of the much anticipated Seaside Fair, and what a day it was! Willy Primary was absolutely buzzing - from rides and delicious food, to lucky jars and second-hand goods. Thank you to the many Year 1 parents and families who volunteered their time and effort towards making it such a wonderful day - we couldn’t have done it without you.
Here is what some of our students had to say about these big events:
Seaside Fair:
Frankie: I got to pat a baby lamb. It was so cute!
Nicholas S: I loved going on the inflatable obstacle course with Fox.
Huddy: The Super Slide was fun because I felt like I was flying a little bit.
Isla: I loved the Petting Zoo because you got to hold little bunnies.
Ethan: My highlight was dunking Mat and Puhie!
Hannah: My favourite was the obstacle course but I couldn’t jump over the high wall.
Year 1 Dinner:
Lyla: It was fun getting to sit with my friends at the table
Joni: The salad was better than the pizza!
William K: The pizza was really good.
Olive B: I loved eating ice cream with my friends.
Jayna: My favourite part was eating the pizza!
Alfie: I liked colouring in my animal craft.
REMINDER: On Tuesday 16th of December, students will need to bring $5 to school for buddy ice-cream.
Curriculum Focus: Weeks 9-10
Reading: As our LLLL program winds down for the year, students will be revising the sounds we have learned in stage 7.4. This will include activities where students will be prompted to identify, classify and apply these sounds.
Writing: Students have started creating their very own fairytale. So far we’ve explored typical creatures and settings we might encounter within these stories as well as the exciting quests and journeys these characters might find themselves on. In week 9, we will continue building on these stories and polishing them up before we publish.
Numeracy: Week 9 will be a revision unit on 2D and 3D shapes. Including identifying and classifying properties between each shape. Week 10 will be another revision unit on measurement and time. Students will continue practising analogue and digital time. Specifically, to the hour, half past and quarter past/to.
Inquiry: Our topic this term is ‘What Makes Things Move?’ and have been exploring the different forces used to make things move. Over the next few weeks, the students will continue to make their own moving toys. In Week 10, students will finally get to learn why we’ve been collecting shoe boxes…
Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: The Willy Kids focus is “Willy Kids are Ambitious” where students will be exploring the importance of always giving things your true best rather than the “just enough”. Here we’ll discuss the relationship between curiosity and growth as well as the importance of not being afraid of failure. In Respectful Relationships lessons, we have been focusing on ‘Help Seeking’ throughout Term 4. During weeks 9 and 10, the students will be learning about what it means to be a helpful friend. We will explore strategies we can use to identify when someone needs help and what type of support we can give them.
Warm regards,
