Prep Community News

Dear Prep Families,

What an exciting year we have had! As we come to a close, let’s reflect on the amazing work that our preps have done.

Initialit

In our InitiaLit program, our preps have tried their best every day to learn their sounds and letters. We began by introducing them to single sounds and letters; we then moved on to putting those sounds together to read words and, finally, sentences. Our students were then introduced to digraphs and to reading high-frequency words fluently in sentences. We are so incredibly proud of our preps, and watching them move from learning sounds to reading books has been an absolute joy!

Storybook

In Storybook, our students grew their vocabulary as well as deepened their understanding of a text as we explored a single book over two weeks. We introduced a lot of interesting books to our students, and we learnt about how what we read in books connects to our world. We learnt to retell these stories, ask and answer questions and make predictions. We also discussed how events that occurred in these books remind us of something that may have happened in our own loves. Have a look below at all the books that we have explored this year.

Writing

We have been so fortunate to watch our little writers grow from writing single sounds to writing stories. The preps began by learning each sound and how to form each letter, to learning how to write words and finally sentences. Our preps began exploring how to turn these sentences into stories, information reports, lists, cards, and letters. We can’t wait to see what amazing writing they will come up with in Year 1. Below you will find some lists that the students have created.

Maths

Our mathematicians have blown us away with their number knowledge and skills this year. Starting from counting forwards and back, to adding, subtracting, and sharing. The preps have worked hard each day, remembering so many number facts such as ‘Friends of Ten’ and ‘Doubles Facts’. The confidence our preps have in maths has been absolutely outstanding, and we know that next year their number knowledge will grow even more.

Knowledge Building

Throughout the year, our students have participated in a number of knowledge-building lessons to help grow their understanding of the world. They have learnt how to be safe online in Digital Technology. We explored the world in Geography and studied our past in History. In Respectful Relationships, our students learnt how to be safe and positive members of the community, and in Health, they explored how to keep their bodies safe and healthy with good food and healthy practices.

Reminders

As the weather warms up this term, please ensure your child wears a labelled hat to school. This supports our SunSmart policy and helps us protect students while they enjoy outdoor activities.

Take Home Readers

Reading at home is essential for our students’ development. Please encourage nightly reading and kindly ask that students return their book bags on assigned days, for classroom teachers to check reading journals and provide new books. At the end of the term, please ensure that you return all the students’ books to the classroom.

End of Term

The last day of Term 4 is the 19th of December, and students will be dismissed early that day at 1:30 pm.

We once again thank you for such a fantastic year with our preps. We are incredibly fortunate to have taught such an amazing group of children, and we will all miss them when they move on to Year 1.

The prep team wishes you a safe and peaceful holiday, and we can’t wait to see you all again next year!

Happy Holidays!
