Prep

Last week, grade prep students used paper plates and collaging techniques to create their own animal artwork. Students discussed features of animals and the term “layering”. They then layered and overlapped paper onto their plate with glue to create a collage effect and drew and cut out details to add to their collage.

One

Grade one students recently experimented with chalk pastel smudging techniques to create a disco ball that looked like it was shining. Last week, grade one students watched the short film “La Luna”. They created an artwork in response to the film using oil pastels on black paper. Students were inspired by the colours (blues and yellows) and shapes (stars and circles/semi-circles) in the film and used these observations to draw their own scenes.

Two

Last week, the grade one students created a still life coloured paper collage inspired by the work of British Pop Artist, Patrick Caulfield. Students used their knowledge of shape and pattern to create this piece. They used repeated shapes and colours, drawing different objects (e.g. vases, cups, fruit) and collaging them onto a coloured piece of paper. Check out these eye-catching collages!

Three

Grade three students have been working on an Uluru artwork over the last two weeks. The students used pastel to create depth in their artwork, using tints, tones, and shades to make their Uluru piece look 3D. In the following week, the grade threes used Posca pens to create dot patterns in the background. The piece was finished by adding kangaroo silhouettes to the foreground.

Four

Last week, grade four students experimented with coloured chalk pastel. They explored the artwork of Emily Carr, using her work as inspiration for a forest-themed artwork. As students explored this new medium, they created a foreground and background for their scene. They practiced chalk pastel techniques such as layering and blending to create interesting effects and add movement to their pieces.

Five

Over the last few weeks, the grade five students have been working on a mixed-media turtle artwork. Students created their own shell designs with pastel, experimenting with colour combinations and taking inspiration from Wassily Kandinsky’s artwork “Squares with Concentric Circles”. In the following week, students added the head and flippers of the turtle and experimented with creating texture using line and pattern. They then used a combination of pastel and watercolour paint to complete the background.

Six

Recently, grade six students created self-portraits, inspired by the style of Tim Burton. They experimented with value (tint and shade) while using chalk pastels to create some striking effects. Check out some of the amazing portraits! Over the last two weeks, the grade six students have been working on their scrapbook journals. They have been using paper collage techniques and creative layout designs to enhance their pages. They also created silhouettes of their faces to go into their scrapbooks.
