Grade 4 Community News

Dear Grade 4 families
What a wonderful year it has been working with our amazing Grade 4 students. We hope they have enjoyed this journey as much as we have! Their growth, effort, and achievements throughout the year have been truly inspiring. We are so proud of each and every one of them and wish them all the very best as they step into Grade 5 in 2026.
Reading
In the final weeks of Term 4, students have been deepening their exploration of poetry using My Little Book of Poetry. Each student has their own copy, which they annotate as they study, helping them engage closely with the text. They have been exploring a variety of poetic techniques, including rhyming schemes, rhyme and rhythm, repetition, figurative language, and imagery. Through guided discussions and independent practice, students have been learning how these elements create mood, meaning, and impact in a poem. Their growing confidence in identifying and analysing these features is helping them to become more thoughtful, creative readers and writers. Ask your child to share their favourite poetic technique and a line from a poem that caught their attention!
Writing
Building on their reading of My Little Book of Poetry, students have been putting their learning into practice by creating their own poems. After exploring a new type of poem as a class, we brainstorm together, discussing ideas, techniques, and language features. Students then develop their own brainstorming plans before drafting their original pieces. This term, they have experimented with rhyming schemes, rhyme and rhythm, repetition, metaphors and similes, narrative poems, and vivid imagery. It has been wonderful to see their creativity flourish as they apply these techniques to express their thoughts, feelings, and stories through poetry.
Maths
In the final weeks of Term 4, students have continued building their skills in multiplication and division by using bar models to represent worded problems. They practised translating real-life scenarios into visual models, which helped them solve both multiplication and division problems with greater accuracy and understanding. This approach strengthened their ability to plan, organise, and check their work when tackling complex problems. To finish the year, students completed a consolidation week, focusing on areas of individual need, ensuring they were confident and prepared to carry their learning into Grade 5.
