Foundation News…

Our World

Term 2's Integrated Topic is 'Our World'. Each week we have been learning about a different country and their culture. So far we have explored into the countries of Persia, United Kingdom, Korea, Italy and Turkey. We look at the location, famous landmarks, special traditions, food, celebrations and any interesting facts.

For Italy, we learnt about the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was built standing tall and straight, but the foundation underneath started to sink. It forever has stayed leaning from then. We then made our own leaning towers of Pisa with just one piece of paper!

For Turkey, we learned about the traditional marble art, called Ebru. It involves water and oil paints to create a unique pattern to then transfer onto paper. We attempted to create our own version with Shaving Cream and Paints!

Number Talk

Once a week we engage in a Numeracy Number Talk. This task allows the students to use their mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills. Reasoning is making logical links and connections within and between areas of math and to organise and communicate their math ideas effectively.

Students are encouraged to all think about the questions posed, and then share their strategies and reasons for coming to their answer.

This weeks Number Talk posed the question "Which one doesn't belong?".

Here are some ideas the Foundation students discussed:

'There are 3 shapes with 4 sides, and the other shape has 5 sides'

'There is one shape with criss cross on it'

'Three shapes have curved lines, and one only has straight lines'

'The oval is a long shape, and the others are not'

'That triangle is upside down'

'Triangles have 3 sides and the other shape doesn't'
