Week 8, Term 2

STEM

Grade 1 and 2 

Students will build upon their prior understandings of seasons, weather patterns and the changes that occur in each season. They will explore how these changes impact everyday life. 

 

Grade 3 and 4

Students will begin to investigate the properties of heat and the difference between conduction and combustion. This will be linked back to the students’ understanding of how First Nations people harnessed this knowledge to their advantage. 

 

Grade 5 and 6

Students will begin to explore the behaviour of light when it encounters an object. Students will define the properties of an object based on how light interacts with it, for example objects that are transparent, translucent and opaque. 

 

Physical Education

 

Prep PE

This week, students will begin to learn the fundamental movement skill of bouncing a ball. They will be taught to push the ball towards the ground using their fingertips for added control. 

 

Prep Sensory

Students will participate in rotational activities with the focus of improving their core strength, balance and ability to work in a small group.

 

Grade 1 and 2

Students will participate in several small group activities, focussing on the fundamental movement skills of bouncing a ball and leaping. When bouncing a ball, they will be encouraged to push the ball down with their fingertips and control the bounce at waist height. 

 

Grade 3 and 4

Students will continue to enjoy learning the sport of Australian Rules Football (AFL). They will participate in a modified game and continue to learn the key skills of kicking, handballing and marking the ball. 

 

Grade 5 and 6

Students will continue to learn the key skills of Australian Rules Football (AFL) including; kicking, handballing and marking the ball. When participating in a modified game, they will be encouraged to monitor their field position relative to their teammates and opponents, both when in defence and attack. 

 

Performing Arts

🎵 Prep

Students will read the book 'Ernie Dances to the Didgeridoo' to introduce the instrument and its importance in First Nations culture. They will listen and respond to the different sounds it makes. As a class, they will also begin to write a song based on one of the Wurundjeri 7 seasons. 

 

🎤 Grade 1 and 2

Students will create and perform their own 'Pitch Map'. They will also bring together their learning on pitch and rhythm this semester on tuned instruments. This will begin their exploration on the musical term, 'melody'.

 

🎶 Grade 3 and 4

Students are continuing to explore how their own ideas can be developed into dramatic action. They will explore how the drama element of 'tension' can help create dramatic action that keeps an audience engaged. 

 

🎭 Grade 5 and 6

Students are watching their puppetry performance back and reflecting on how it went. This reflection will be part of their learning snapshot for this term. Students who have completed this task will be watching and responding to excepts of performance from Bangarra Dance Company; 'Unaipon'. This dance work is inspired by the life and work of influential Aboriginal person; David Unaipon (the man depicted on our $50 note).

Visual Arts

Prep

This week students will be collecting leaves from the school grounds and using crayons to rub these leaves in Autumnal tones, ready to put together next week for their 2025 calendar.

 

Grade 1 and 2

Students will be creating an Indigenous inspired weaving. They will decorate their popsicle stick loom using paint pens and follow the under and over pattern of weaving papers.

 

Grade 3 and 4

Students will be continuing construction of their box monster, including painting the base coat white all over. They will also paint a black layer onto their abstract painting from last week and scrape back using scraping tools. 

 

Grade 5 and 6

Students will finalise their story and symbols about their Australian animal. They will begin to draw their x-ray animal using scratch paper.
