CURRICULUM

📚 Phonemic awareness: reading and phonics

Students will read decodable texts, using their knowledge of sounds to segment and blend words. We will look at some 'irregular' words, and discuss the parts of the word that need to be learnt 'by heart'.

We will listen to nursery rhymes and listen for the rhyming pairs. Students will manipulate letters to write and read CVC rhyming pairs.

Students will learn about the double letters of 'ff', 'll', 'ss', 'zz'.

What can you do at home?

-Help your child to read their decodable 'take home' book each night

-Explore the Reading Eggs library and Fast Phonics to read decodable texts

-Continue to revise sounds on the sound/letter rings

-Talk about words that rhyme. Provide a word for your child to rhyme with eg. 'cat' and say / write as many rhyming words as you can

📝 Literature: reading responses and writing

The mentor text this week is Tom Tom by Rosemary Sullivan. Students will use this text to form the basis of their writing experiences, like comparing themselves to the main character, Tom Tom, and responding to a visual prompt from the story.

Students will revise the exit and entry points for lower case letters, starting back at 'a'. They will look at 'the boss' - c and the related 'cousins' - a, d, g, o and

What can you do at home?

-Engage in fine motor tasks such as sorting, threading, writing, colouring, making, building, play dough and painting

-Reinforce correct entry and exit points for letters if your child writes at home

-Practise lower case letter formations on the app 'red writing'

🔢  Maths

This week, we will expand on the concept of subtraction. Students will use tools like tens frames, number lines and unifix to take away from a larger number to make a smaller number. We will begin with using the vocabulary of 'take away' and 'is/makes' to say and create number sentences. They will learn the strategy of 'count back' to help them. They will also create number stories using their iPads and playscapes to demonstrate their understanding.

What can you do at home?

-Use Mathseeds on the iPad to explore subtraction concepts

-Make a large group (eg. toys, cars, lego etc) and take away to make a smaller number. Use the count back strategy when you do this!

🌏 CBL - Country

Students will visit the Imagination Garden to clean it up, in preparation for bringing Country to the garden.

👯 Friendology

Some classes didn't complete lesson 4 as advised in a previous Wonga Weekly. We will complete 'Friendship Facts' this week.
