COHR Library - "A child who READS will be an adult that THINKS!"

LIBRARY - Term 2 2024

P - 6

We began Term 2 with a focus on Anzac Day. Our Preps were introduced to why we commemorate this important day with exploring some symbols associated with Anzac Day. In Years 1 to 6 we read the book -  Wear a Purple Poppy by Fiona White,

Remembering Animals in War. This introduced to students the use of varied animals that played significant roles in war and that these animals have a designated coloured poppy just for them and a day for them so we can remember their efforts.

NSS - National Simultaneous Storytime is celebrated Australia wide on Wednesday 22nd May.  At COHR, it was recognised in Library lessons and some classes did buddy activities.  Students also completed a 'scavenger hunt' in the Library looking for blue things!  This year's book was Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker.

"I am a collector. Always looking, finding ... and keeping! Bowerbird loves BLUE. Magnificent colbalt. Brilliant, vibrant blue! But something is missing. What could it be?"

This picture book from Aura Parker stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for blue! It's a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird's search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower a mix of natural and unnatural objects attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage young children to read and enjoy books as well as teach them the value of literacy. Now celebrating its 24th successful year and coming off the back of our most successful year yet, we have no doubt that the reading of Aura Parker's Bowerbird Blues will continue to build this wonderful campaign.

PREPS:

This term the Preps have been introduced to the wonderful engaging books by Aaron Blabey and his many fun characters.  After reading his stories, we have discussions where we share our thoughts and emotions about each book.  We explore his characters and discuss the traits they have and how the authors convey their characteristic traits through words and images.

Cyber Safety has been introduced with us discussing - what is the internet and who are our trusted adults that we can go to for help when we're online?

Borrowing continues with options of 1, 2 or 3 books.

Year 1/2:

Our 1\2's are going to be discovering Maggie Hutchings books and enjoying the antics of the main character who is a cockroach! In our lessons we will be looking at how authors create characters using language and images.  Rhyme and the use of rhyming words will also be explored within her books.

Towards the end of term we will explore some stories by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytellers to learn about some of their cultural traditions.

Cybersafety lesson revisited how we can continue to be safe online as well as defining what is green time and screen time.

Year 3/4:

Our Year 3\4 students have been introduced to the Dewey Decimal System and explored how are books are shelved.  Students have been discovering the different locations of some books and why they're on those shelves.  A variety of picture books will be read to identify text features where the authors have used 'alliteration' to enhance their written texts.

Towards the end of term we will explore some stories by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytellers to learn about some of their cultural traditions.

Cybersafety continues with discussing screen time and green time and how we should switch off 1 hour before we go to sleep!

Year 5/6:

We have continued using Storybox - Storytools where authors and illustrators explain and share their techniques and give out handy tips about storywriting. We have particularly explored and learnt about the actual book making process.  Where the authors get their ideas, their beginning manuscripts that are sent of to editors, publishers and the steps involved to get the books printed. These videos have been great as we get to see and hear from publishers and get an idea of what is involved in the long process of making a book.

Towards the end of term we will explore some stories by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytellers to learn about some of their cultural traditions.

Cybersafety continues with discussing screen time and green time and do we have a balance when we are online and off.
